    2005 Starter question

    Uggghhh.
    Four years ago , right after we bought the 2.5 Z4 , the starter would not start everytime. I noticed that the starter had marks where it had been struck. I paid a shop to change it.
    Forward to now. Same thing. When I changed the starter myself . The core was tested good and thought I wasn't going through that again and replaced it anyway. I noticed that there wasn't a wire on the top stud for the solenoid when I removed it. I figured it grounded itself by being mounted. Anyway, it did start up a couple of times. Then it didn't again.
    I replaced the ignition switch. It started up a few times after that. Then nothing again. Tried the other key. Nothing. Put a volt meter to the solenoid,
    I have 12.4 at the solenoid , but do not hear anything. Put hand on solenoid while my son tried to start it . Nothing.
    So , this is only to 2005 owners that has changed their starters . I only have the single wire coming out of the loom . It is hooked up to the bottom stud on the solenoid. Was there a second wire that I don't see?

    The single wire you have is what is described in the repair manual. However there is a note not to twist the cable shoe while tightening as it will cause shorting to starter motor housing. Proper torque of all bolts should also be followed to prevent shorting.

    The fact that you are getting power at starter perhaps points out a further downstream issue. Have you checked the power at alternator? The connection between starter and alternator is between x6512 and x6509.

    Also have you scanned the vehicle for error codes?
    There are few control units involved in the starting process and scanning for errors is a must.

    X510 is the hot wire that is going to the solenoid? I have 12.4 volts there with the key in the start position , however , the solenoid does not pull in. It is as if I am losing a ground. It must ground through the starter body. I have performed an ohm test that tests that the starter body is grounded to the body.

    Hot wire passes from x6510 (a) -> x6512 -> x6509
    Ground is probably the bolts x6510 & x6511
