Hi there! I just acquired a beautiful, low-mileage (73k) '88 535i.
When the car has more than 2 people in it, I notice an intermittent grinding/scraping noise coming from the rear wheels. It happens when I accelerate quickly with 3 or more passengers, but then disappears. It also sometimes happens when I am turning the car at low speeds without additional passengers - pulling into a parking spot that requires a significant turn, for example.
There doesn't appear to be any impact to acceleration (no slippage), but the noise is a bit unsettling. My mechanic said the breaks are fine, but I haven't followed up with him on this noise. He initially said it was normal.
Has anyone encountered something similar? If so, please let me know what you discovered.
Thanks!
-Doug
Hi there. I just posted a question about an odd noise coming from the rear wheels when accelerating rapidly with more than one passenger. Any chance anyone on this thread has experienced this?

I am going to guess that your haft shaft is dieing.

Thanks Andy. How big of a deal is that?
relatively easy, here are the repair manuals and nominal values etc https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/
parts catalog with drawings http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

before you go for the bigger repairs, better check is something is touching when the car is loaded, exhaust, heat shields, brake parts etc pp
also check the driveshaft center bearing
