Transmission Dead, Planning Rebuild, Questions About Upgrades

Some of you may remember me having issues a little bit ago. I changed the fluid and filter and things were pretty good until yesterday. I drove to my parents in Ft. Lauderdale, went to get on the highway, it downshifted, and slipped shifting up again. When I got of the highway it was jerking and downshifting hard. Then after a couple lights, it wouldn't move from a stop and went into failsafe.

So anyway, I'm planning on driving my dad's car back to Tampa and having it rebuilt maybe by a local shop here. (No don't want a 6-speed, like the Auto for traffic).

    Few questions:

    1) I'm going to get a new torque converter. I have a non-sport car.
    - Can you put a sport torque converter in?
    - I know it has a higher stall speed, is it worth it?
    - Will it work with my non-sport EGS computer or cause problems?
    - Who do you recommend for torque converters. I've seen people link Revmax. Are they quality?

    2) I want to address the valve body at the same time.
    - Can they be rebuilt?
    - Or should I just replace it?

    3) I plan on also replacing: rear main, coolant passage cover, guibo, center support bearing, CV joint at diff, transmission mounts
    - Am I missing anything?
    - Do I need to think about rear diff stuff at the same time or rear wheel bearings?

    4) are there any other things I should address at this time and/or upgrade?

    Thanks for the input.

I'm in almost the same boat, my 01 had a bad transmission when i bought it. Ordered replacement trans from local seller, the bought a used sport TC, and from my understanding the sport tc will operate without a sport EGS but not perfectly..lucky for me i've got one for my car.

As for the other stuff, I am also doing the rear main seal, water passage, guibo,CSB, transmounts. I might want to change the fluid on the rear diff, and wheel bearings but those really can be done later if it comes down to it since you don't have the get the car jacked up high to do them.

but that's me, i'm sure more experienced members will chime in on the matter.

If you have the money for a higher stall torque converter, get one, it's worth it. It does not require anything but swapping the torque converter out, not connected to electronics in any way. I have a revmax higher stall converter and it's great. Revmax is good, I would recommend them.

I would consider replacing the parking pin. I rebuilt my gb due to a broken a-drum and didn't do this. The pin broke shortly after now the parking gear won't engage; have to use the $*&@ (hand) foot brake when parking. My thoughts are that it can be fixed without pulling the gb. Will have to address this at some point...

    2001 7-S62, 2002 X5 S2,
    1) I'm going to get a new torque converter. I have a non-sport car.
    - Can you put a sport torque converter in? YES
    - I know it has a higher stall speed, is it worth it? Up to the driver
    - Will it work with my non-sport EGS computer or cause problems? Should not, just shifts a few beats later.
    - Who do you recommend for torque converters. I've seen people link Revmax. Are they quality? YES

    2) I want to address the valve body at the same time.
    - Can they be rebuilt? YES - Revmax $599 with new solenoids - well worth it
    - Or should I just replace it? REVMAX

    3) I plan on also replacing: rear main, coolant passage cover, guibo, center support bearing, CV joint at diff, transmission mounts
    - Am I missing anything? Be sure to use a FILTRAN filter and proper fluid.
    - Do I need to think about rear diff stuff at the same time or rear wheel bearings? That's up to you.

    4) are there any other things I should address at this time and/or upgrade? If you have the transmission rebuilt, replace the TC and rebuild the valve body, you'll be in great shape. Raw cost on that is $500 trans kit, $600 valve body rebuild, $300 range on reman torque converters - Goes up from there.

Wow shop near me in Tampa quoted $4800 for a "soft parts" rebuild. That obviously includes labor. I don't have the time nor space to do this myself, so I need to find someone to do it. The shop near my parents in Ft. Lauderdale doesn't rebuild them -- they send them to Eriksson in CT. I have no problem with that because they are great, but there's the cost of shipping involved, which may still be worth it. Doesn't help that the car is 250 miles away from me right now.

Well this sucks. Looks like this may take longer than I thought. Waiting to hear back regarding pricing for removal and sending to Eriksson. Kinda makes me wish I just prophylactically had the transmission removed and rebuilt while I was living in CT. Sigh.

Perhaps also look into level 10, I've heard good things. They might be a tad more expensive though

Yeah, I looked at their website. Looks good! But it would still require some shipment to NJ.

Waiting to hear on turn around time to get the tranny to Eriksson and back and installed. Price actually seemed quite reasonable from this shop to go that route.

Ok so the transmission is out and on the palate on the way to Eriksson. We will see how things go.

He is going to call me with pricing and a list of other stuff to replace. He was talking about going Lemforder for the guibo. Thoughts? Should I just go genuine on everything? I'm afraid this is going to be another $1000 added to my bill doing the driveshaft stuff.

Another unrelated question. Any info on converting prefacelift to steptronic? From searching, the posts are almost 10 years old. Some say you have to get a Euro trans computer. Others say it made their car run weird because of the different stall speeds of the torque converters? Anyone have info?

On the topic of step on a pfl car, I did it and yes you need a euro egs for it to work or at least the coding of one, if I could figure out how to I could get you mine. Seeing as the euro pfl step equipped cars is the same as ours with the same tc you'll be fine. That oly applies to FL cars with a sport egs.

Ok, so I need a Euro EGS from a PFL car that is a non-sport. How the heck do I get the right one of those? I guess maybe by realOEM part number?

Coorect a euro egs from a step equipped car from the same year. Realoem was hit or miss for me. What I did was run the Vin from the egs I was looking at to see if it was step optioned. It might help that mine is from a 735i.
