    Arctic E23 Build

I am a new Bimmer owner coming from a long history of air cooled Bavarian autos. I am excited about this “new” 7 series project. 1980 745i Turbo, M102 with swapped Getrag 265/5 close ratio gearbox and 25% LSD in the rear . Previous previous owner purchased the car in SoCal a few years back and drove it to Idaho without issue. After some local miles the car began running poorly. With progressive engine and break problems, a friend of mine negotiated a purchase of the car. As he sorted out the cars issues he discovered the exhaust manifold and waste side of the stock turbo were both cracked and the hydroboost master cylinder had failed and was leaking profusely into the engine compartment. He proceeded to purchase every seal and serviceable part under the hood to freshen up the engine and bay and started sourcing parts for the turbo setup.
    No luck stateside
So a stack of performance aftermarket parts where purchased including A Precision 6262 ceramic bearing turbo, wastegate, bov, top mount M30/M50 exhaust manifold, DIY MegaSquirt with wasted spark jumpers, electric boost control solenoid, wide-band AFM gauge, intercooler, and Mishimoto radiator.
Followed by a lay-off and relocation as a commercial airline pilot
A great time to offload some extra cars!
I purchased the car in pieces picked up the freshly worked cylinder head from the machinist loaded it all on a barge and shipped it (non-operable $$!) to Anchorage, Alaska. In March 2018 I was settled into my new place and started my build. While dry fitting the turbo parts to start ducting boost pipe I discovered my turbo collides with the Dizzy on the M102 cylinder head. It stabs in a hole and stands very tall compared to every later M30 type ignition. I have not come up with an affordable or manageable solution for this problem using the parts I own. Factory replacement parts are great but I would need a complete turbo setup since all of those parts were removed and disposed of before I began. M106 cylinder head would upgrade my Dizzy.
I am open to suggested solutions. I was thrilled with the potential power development from the performance parts. I am also looking forward to the feel of such a luxurious Bavarian classic on the road. Thanks for looking

I'm of no help from the turbo stand point, except to suggest to look at other manifolds. Maybe they will put the turbo in a diffetent position.
Mostly I just wanted to say !YOWZA!
You have some intersting vehicles. Very nice.

Thanks tow TowJamma. I have searched high and low for a bottom mount turbo. This is what I found:
Unfortunately it is a t4 only casting and the turbo I own is a t3.

BTW I am an air cooled mechanic. The Porsches are customer cars and I only own most of the VWs

Is your 745 Ascot Grey? It looks so similar to my old '82 that I am parting out. Good luck figuring out your next move, I am excited to see how you progress.

Kinda thought that the bugs were your cars when you said Bavarian Air Cooled as Porsche didn't make Bavarian cars but the Ingolstodt VW plant is in Bavaria.

Is the hood going to need venting to keep the turbo cool enough to not melt paint?

Yes emphasis on Air Cooled. I did rest the cylinder head on the block with the turbo and manifold bolted into place. I was surprised at how low the turbo was positioned in the engine bay. Protection would be more necessary for the inner fender well. It is a great design even for a very large turbo.

What bits are you missing from the turbo system? Manifold and WG elbow? I will ask around. I have about six or seven elbows. Send me an AK plate and pay postage, it is yours.

Convert the thing to a Motronic style dizzy cap, rotor, drive, and timing cover.

FYI, your car has a 728i camshaft in it. If worn, I would probably just slap in a Febi B35 unit and their rockers. One of the members found out their rockers are actually thicker than OEM, yet not as thick as the HD sold that are in my head being built. Hell, just take a B35 head and install all guts into yours. Problem solved (plus gain dual springs), we are doing that with my bud's M102 from my dead 12/82 Ljet. Trying to put his 11/84 on the road for $1000 or less.

More pics of the inside of this car?

Hit Man X, thanks for the knowledge I am not familiar with the similarities and appreciate the help. I noticed the later model M106 had a dizzy that would solve the placement issue. Is “B35” the cylinder head description? I researched the difference in drive assemblies at the camshaft end. If a later model camshaft and dizzy assembly will install on the existing cylinder head that would be the least amount of investments to tie this all together. To return to stock on the boost setup I would need K27 turbo, both manifold halves, elbo, WG, all of the duct work, blower fan and intercooler . b

I believe it was “branded” with the vin upon arrival at port in Washington. It has alway lived in California according to the earliest known owner.

Ah okay, forget you are new to BMW. B35 is basically a smog friendly 9:1 engine that makes about the same power as a 10:1 B34. Same cubes, just B35 had a better flowing top end and better ECU. Lots of little things to make +20hp smog legal.

Remember, you will need the B34/35 style timing cover too...I would skim it with your head the least amount possible. Maybe 0.005" ish. Robbing a solid B35 cyl head for its parts is a great, cheap way to get you moving forward. You can always sell off the valves and casting, or just scrap it.

Unsure how that top mount will fit, if not...can you not purchase a T4OC turbine housing and a T04E compressor housing to use a TCD manifold?

PLS zip me a picture of the piston faces in this engine. I am curious how they differ from the 09/81-05/83 Ljet pistons which are 7.5:1 static. Yours is 7:1 if you care. Also the face of the cylinder head.

Good looking car. If you decide to to return to stock manifold, I have a spare & possibly turbo also.
Also, should you decide to convert over to the later 013 ecu that came in the m106 equipped cars, this can be done fairly easily with the right parts.
Running Megasquirt is doable as well if you have the time/patience.

I find the stock parts very romantic. 235hp rating from the factory is plenty to push her around. cost wise, what would i expect to pay to build dependably with stock refurbished parts? I am into the parts shown $3500+ i would have to recoup. I will drive her daily.

The biggest expense would be turbo, probably best to rebuild most anything used at this point.

Quality K27 kit is $100, balance about $80 if you are slick to rebuild your own. Not much to a turbocharger really.

Gpop Shop has good kits and offers VSR balance. Stock compressor wheel is comical at 47mm and quite portly, just about anything is better. Remember...it was designed in the '70s. Minimum of 40 years ago. 40. The computer that designed it probably took up an entire room, $5 says your smartphone is more powerful.

I just spotted a 1989 e24 635CSi in the whole cars section. If I can source all the B35 parts I plan to go that direction. I haven’t tried to source anything locally yet. Most cars in salvage only go back 20 years. A complete head is what I am after. Do you have any connections?

    Connections for what?

I still need your M102 pics of the pistons, head, and block. That will help us figure out some real info. I would rock that 7:1 static no problem.

Did you receive my email back?

I'll be damned, head has late style coolant passages too. 0.080" Cometic on there and ARPs. Let 'er rip.

Alright, alright, alright. I got a few things here and I am looking for some more advice.
I am still waiting on the 60-2 trigger wheel and new HD Febi rockers.
I have MS 3.X and I would like to use wasted spark and sequential FI. I plan to use a GM 3 coil system. Should I swap the engine harness with a later model engine harness? Or do I have enough here to just add some wires and plug it in?
BTW I have the pinout converter plug so I will cut the factory plug end and wire directly to the MS.

Cylinder head and timing cover have been surfaced 0.080 and B35 camshaft is installed with new rocker arms.
Today I will remove the factory engine wire harness. I plan to prepare the block surface and attach the exhaust and intake manifold before setting the whole assembly on the block. 8’ megasquirt wire harness for fuel and ignition control will arrive on Saturday.
Wednesday while in Anchorage I am going junk yarding for a GM 3 coil wasted spark setup. OhBaby! Getting excited!!
