    Tuning hardware

I just got an '08 335xi manual, and I'm interested in going to a stage 1 tune. I come from Subaru, where the tuning interface is fairly straightforward. Get a Cobb AccessPort, or use a cable and PC for open source. No hardware to install permanently. For BMW, I see the JB4, which is a permanent hardware installation, and the MHD, which is apparently just a cable like with Subaru. What are the advantages of each? I think I saw mention of using them together?

JB4 is a very fancy piggyback, while MHD flashes the ecu maps.
