    2011 BMW 740Li in MS

    Hello everybody,

I wanted to call attention to this vehicle since it may be appealing to the DIYers out there. It's a 2011 740Li, 130,000 miles, that needs a valve cover gasket. I believe this is about a $2500 repair at the dealer.

    The car needs tires.

The interior show signs of wear, especially in the driver's area, but is overall in decent shape. Some of the items that may need to be replaced include the Start button - it works fine, but the face is worn. Some of the climate control/stereo buttons are in similar shape. The door trim on the inside of driver's door is worn also, but is normal wear.

There is a 2+ foot scratch is the driver's side rear door, looks like somebody scraped by a metal post or some such.

At the moment the car is listed at $10,199.

Go to https://www.johnsontoyota.com/used/B...b7c879d7bf.htm for pictures. The scratch is not visible, but some of the interior wear is.

I live pretty close to this, and am considering buying it and wrenching on it myself, just not sure if I want the project right now. Let me know if there are questions.

    Thanks everyone!

A valve cover gasket should NOT be a $2500 job afaik. It's one of the easiest maintenance bits. Are you sure it isn't something else?

I believe that was a quote from a BMW dealer, but I heard it 3rd person or more; I'll have to double check. There has to be some reason the car is only $10,000, a quick search resulted comparable examples for several thousand more.

After looking into this further, the only known issue is the valve cover gasket. The $2500 cost was a strict by-the-book labor/hours estimate; something like 20ish hours at slightly over $100/hr labor. Apparently the car only burns an extra 1-2 quarts of oil between changes and doesn't even drip when parked, only when the engine is idling. Evidently it drips onto part of the exhaust system. So, if somebody wants to do the work themselves or knows somebody who will do it cheaper, this may be a solid car.
