At some angles the new Supra reminds me of the Z3. Now that someone has made a render of a convertible Supra, I think the likeness is apparent.
Give it a BMW nose and it could have been the new 2020 Z3. A much better looking car than the new Z4 to my eye.

Nice.
i saw a the rear of Miata in a parking lot yesterday and thought it was a Z3 until I got closer.
People asked for new Z4 Coupe. So glad Toyota could come through for us, haha.
According to the article Toyota is considering a convertible. So maybe BMW will react with a coupe too. Although, if you can get a Toyota cheaper that looks as good or better with the same engine it might be hard sell for BMW.

I doubt it. People who want a BMW want a badge. People who want a Supra want a ~sports car~ investment.Although, if you can get a Toyota cheaper that looks as good or better with the same engine it might be hard sell for BMW.
BMW will not make a coupe version of the Z4
BMW will not make an M version of the Z4
Toyota will not make a convertible version of the Supra
Its the same car. Supra is the coupe versiom, Z4 the roadster

Actually, I think they’re already planning a crossover version. It seems all cars must be replaced by crossovers, so there you go. How about a shooting brake that’s jacked up with 22” rims and all season tires?

If there's money to be made and the collaborative agreement allows, BMW would certainly build coupe and M versions of the ugly-ass 2020 Z4; same thing with Toyota building a drop top Supra version.
I have not seen a Z4 up close as of yet, but judging by published photos, my guess is that it will be a sales disappointment, which would mean no M or coupe.
The Supra is no beauty queen either, mostly because of the weird front bumper / grill; but it's not as repulsive as the ridiculously overstyled Z4.
Spoken like a true classic purist and I agree.
Saw it in person at the auto show yesterday. The hood cut line over the wheel and into the fender-meeting the door. It's the most e36/7/8 element I have seen on a car since the original. It's more of an e36/7/8 touch than anything I've seen from BMW including the Z4.

But no kidney grill :-(
I think it looks kinda like a new, aggressively modern interpretation of an E86 M coupe. I gotta say, I do really like the looks, but I’m not going to buy one - a few years ago, I’d have more likely jumped at it, but it doesn’t seal any deals with my archaic fancy today.
Id have been more excited if it was a ‘20 BMW Z4 M coupe, or something... even though I am a softy for Toyota for ever and always. Toyota doesn’t seem eager to make this extra exciting, and I’d rather a new Supra be a more performance oriented GT halo car, ala MkIVs. This is as best as I’ll get from either company for the foreseeable future, and yet I’d rather they kept their formulas separated.
Could be wrong, just my general cursory impressions.

Built in Austria in a BMW plant, using BMW components nearly everywhere, using BMW diagnostics... I think BMW is building the Supra too.

Well, there's an argument to be made that neither the new Z4 or the Supra are BMWs. They are made by Magna Steyr in Austria. Which also made the Audi TT, Mercedes G Class, Grand Cherokee, and a lot of other cars from various manufacturers. I would guess that the engine and a lot of parts are manufactured by BMW, but the car is assembled/made by Steyr.

Ah. So the BMW does have a kidney grill. Perfect.

Yeah, the bad part.
If I want to buy a BMW SUV as some sort of cross to bear, I’ll take mine.... murican made, thankyouverymuch. After the Zs, a bmw without plastic squeaks just doesn’t drive correctly.

The pics I've seen of a 2019 BMW Z4 does have a little similarity to the Supra but with the Z4 having a turbocharged 3.0L with 382 ponies, in an inline 6, can the Supra compare? What about dollar for dollar??
According to Jordan Petersen, the two cars are mechanically dissimilar enough for contrasts to be readily apparent to even the youngest of drivers and critics alike. The Supra is made for boy drivers, and the Z4 is instead made for girl drivers. Any sort of cross mingling of the two products with their clearly opposite market is, of course, outright cultural Taoism and its propaganda. Same car, different skin, indeed! Pshaw pshaw. Next you’ll be telling me that giving a roadster a hardtop makes it a coupe! I, good people of this serious business car forum, remain ever in disagreement with such doublespeak.

Got to spend a couple of days up close with the new Supra last weekend at Barrett-Jackson... I think I might buy one and work with a body shop to artistically rebadge it as a BMW, and maybe even work in some stylized floating kidney grills. Not sure who I'll piss off more, the Toyota Supra fans or the BMW purists (wait, that's me).
It should be 5x120 on the wheel bolt pattern, no? It will be fun to chose an existing BMW OEM wheel to use on the Supra.
Although not available in the first eight 2020 launch colors, I'm hoping Toyota will bring back Deep Jewel Green for 2021. Otherwise I'll just have to wrap it.
I'm sure somebody will beat me to this, but if BMW isn't going to give me a small 2 door 'Z' coupe (and they won't do individual program on M2's), I'm just going to have to roll my own.
Can't imagine what the Toyota dealer is going to do when I roll up for warranty work in a BMW Supra. Better yet, let's see if the local BMW dealer even notices and just does the work without question! The service writer will probably say "I didn't even know the Z4 came in a hard top! Looks cool!" LOL
