Any option for recovering sport seats?

My 1999 sport seats are tired, and the drivers is splitting at almost all the seams on the backrest and lower cushion and the passenger side has a large tear in the upper flat portion of the passenger seat.

Is my best option getting some regular seats from another car? It's a shame, they all work great powerwise but the leather is just old and looks every bit of 160k miles.

    Dang they do look great!

I'm not sure I'm committed to spending that much on this car, its the "beater E38." The nice one's seats are mint, just slight wear on the piping on the drivers side. The shorty one, unfortunately, pretty soon I'm going to be sitting on seat foam at the rate the bottom cushion is wearing away!

You can find used sport seats if you look hard enough. Try to find from a seller who doesn’t think they are worth more than their weight in gold.

I agree, just more than I'd like to drop in a car with a squeeky suspension, blistered trunk paint and key marks down the entire passenger side. If it was a keeper, maybe but I'm looking at a $1,000 value at 160k miles with those defects.

I keep seeing them for $1500 a pair. I keep hoping my local yard will get some nice ones. They had a nice 1999 540i sport come in with good seats and I kick myself for not buying them.

Agreed. I bought a whole car in mint condition with service history back to day 1 for $4000 last year. Its tough to spend half that on seats.

Watch local upullit type yards. I just got a few contour seat leather and cushion sections for $30 total. They don't charge much for the single sections so I just remove em from the frames. Used this method to create perfect e36 sport and Vader seats for a fraction of what a complete set would have run. Just takes patience

That's what I'm going to do. Nice M3 in your avatar, I have one of those too. Silver/silver '98. Love it.

Aaah thank you, I sold that one a while back in an effort to reduce the number of cars i had....miss the convertible for sure. I have 2 95 m3 still though. E36 chassis is forever my favorite but I kept finding myself saying "I am too old for this shit" every time I got out of the car so long story long I daily an e38 now. Lol

Tell me about it. I just changed the oil at the 2 year mark on the M3 today. Its been 1500 miles since the last oil change. I'd daily it if it was a coupe, but mine has the original top which is basically dry rotted in the tonneau so its useless on rainy days. Its a garage queen.

I'm a collector of E38's, down to 2, a 740i sport and a 740il. The 740il is all original with 70k on the odo with one scratch on the body (drivers door, damn a**hole that parked next to me in the back of the parking lot). The 740i is my DD and looks every bit of the 160k on her odo. But she always starts, never leaves me stranded and puts a smile on my face.

Doesn’t seem right wrecking a bunch of seats to Frankenstein one on the cheap.
