TCM errors when reflashing after transmission swap

I have a 1998 Z3 2.8L auto. I recently installed another tranny from a wrecked Z3 after my wife burned up the original after continuing to drive it when it went into limp mode. After installation I cant get the new transmission to shift out of first. After doing a bunch of research I'm hoping that reflashing the TCM will do the trick. I installed BMW standard tools and INPA works great and I can get to the point in Winkfp where the ECU (MS411) shows what program is installed and what the current update is but they are the same so i havnet seen the need to flash the same program into it. When I try to update the TCM (GS834) I get error 105 error on determining the current assembly ID number. Im not sure if this is because the tranny came from a different Z3 or if i'm needing to do something differrent. I noticed that when i pulled up the coding data in INPA that it doesn't show a manufacture date for the TCM. I used the daten files from the BMW Z3 diagnostic thread and got the error. I then installed the Datens from Bimmer Geeks and got the same error. Im new to flashing and coding and have done a ton of research but I'm needing some advice and a direction to go because I am stumped at this point. Is there something I need to code into the TCM with NCS expert or fix something in the Datens. Any help would be very appreciated. i have include a picture of the error messages and a picture from INPA.

Starting in 1st and not shifting doesn't strike me as a computer error. Most likely it is a OSS error. Make sure you plugged it in, output speed sensor on the top of the tail shaft housing. Or possibly the range sensor is reading incorrectly.

That EGS module (TCU) is not flashable, not sure where you found that it needs to be flashed.
rf900rkw is likely right as always.

Hey thank you. That actually was the first thing I checked was to make sure that sensor had gotten plugged back in. I will check the sensor itself. As far as the bad information I was given, it was an idiot friend of mine! The good news is I've learned a ton about INPA and BMW Standard tools. Thanks again for your help

Learning is what this forum is about. Or was about. It's extremely rare now days around here.

I know that transmission, the GM 4L30, inside and out extremely well. Well enough that.... how can I put this... that I made sure I had none in my stable. I can help with what to look for, but not exactly what each INPA screen will contain.

OSS should read non-zero quickly... 3MPH or so.

Range sensor should show D4 (or equivalent) in Drive. If it only gives individual switch positions, I'll have to look up the logic chart.

Shift solenoids. solenoid 1 (A) should be off in 1st with 2 (B) on. The 1-2 shift happens when solenoid 1 is turned on.

If the shift is being commanded, but it stays in 1st, you need to push it enough to get the 2-3 shift commanded. If it jumps straight to 4th ratio on the 2-3, you have a failed solenoid. If it goes to neutral, you have a failed 2nd clutch pack.

Do you have error codes pulled from the EGS?

Randy, would this module be smart enough to provide good hints as to what is wrong?

It tries. It tries very hard, bless it's heart. But it's blind. The EGS can flag electrical faults such as open solenoids or an invalid range sensor combination. But it can't do any real dynamic testing. It only has an output speed sensor. There is no input sensor. Thus it can not test for gear ratio or engagement issues. The only dynamic test it does is at highway speed, 4th gear in lockup, it compares overall ratio of engine RPM to output RPM. If it is wrong, it ASSUMES a slipping TCC and sets a P0741 code. But no gear ratio errors at the speeds we're talking here.
