    Piston play

I have my car at the shop getting all the gasket done and the guy working on it was checking out the block said he saw no marks on the cylinder walls and the pistons have a lot of play in them. My car is a 97 me. Any idea on what would cause this?

Talking about head off rocking the pistons when at the top of the stroke? Normal.

I know the head is off don't know if it was at the top of the stroke. I'm only asking because he seemed concerned with the amount of play.

It doesn’t matter position, they are supposed to rock back and forth.

What's the spec for piston 'finger play'? He's not recommending muffler bearings, by any chance?
    See ya later,

Why are they supposed to be loose? Is that to allow for expansion when warmed up?

Because that is how internal combustion engines work. They aren't "loose" either. They are how they are supposed to be.

I talked to him today and he measured from the wrong spot. He did say when he went to pull the head the head bolts were hand tight but the headgasket was still fully intact.
