Howdy! I know the Car Talk guys would recommend just putting a piece of black tape over the offending light, but I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix this thing? Is it something I can do?
There's a switch in the buckle catch. Check the wiring to the catch. You may have to remove the seat to do that so treat all wiring under the seat with care.
Don't go poking around with an ohm meter in any yellow connections as they are to do with the airbag system and you might discharge the belt tensioner or airbags.

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
As noted this is likely the seat belt switch in the buckle. I'd start with spraying some compressed air in there as well as some electrical contact cleaner. Then lubricate with a spray lube and work the buckle a few times. (lay some towels around the interior before you spray the cleaner and lube).
