    Drivetrain Error - Clutch?

I received a drive train error malfunction which threw out the following codes:

    1D3101 - Clutch Damaged
    1D3201 - Clutch Seriously Damaged

Does this mean I need a new clutch? 93k miles on the car. Bought it when it had around 40k so i don't know how previous owner treated clutch.

It doesn't really seem like it's slipping too much; however sometimes when I try to accelerate heavily there is some jerking action of the car which thew out the error.

Well, I must admit, I've never seen a code for "Clutch damaged"; but sure enough, if I saw that code, I'd say the car needs a clutch -- oh, and very likely, a flywheel, too, since the second code says "Seriously Damaged".

You haven't said whether your car is a coupe (E92), or a sedan (F30, in 2013). However, just to prepare you, the job will cost about 6 hours labor, at a good BMW shop; probably $750 to 900. The clutch kit retails for ~$450. The flywheel retails for $1350 (OUCH). but if the clutch is seriously damaged, the dual mass flywheel is likely toast also.

    It's a 2013 328i so a F30.

I saw the clutch kit for about $450. There was a luk dual mass flywheel on rockauto for about $450 as well. I wanted to machine the flywheel but heard you can't do that with the dual mass flywheel.

Here's a screenshot of the error code for the severe clutch damage.

    A 2013 328i Sedan is an F30; if it's a Coupe, it's an E92:

The vast majority of good BMW shops will not use customer-supplied parts. Therefore, if you buy your own flywheel, you're probably going to have to do the job yourself. Shops charge dealer retail price for parts, which, if it's an N20 engined F30 sedan, is $1405.

I'd also mention that IF you can find a shop that will install a customer-supplied part, you will not get any warranty whatsoever on the work.

Yeah it's a sedan. I'm thinking of just doing it myself since I'm guessing everything would total up to around $3k which is 1/3 of the car value

Doing your own work, especially on big jobs like this, will absolutely save you a TON of money.

Here's a link to the factory service manuals for your car:

Allow me to say that I am not nearly so intrepid or dedicated that I'd do a clutch on a car, lying on my back in the driveway, using inadequate tools. Guess I'm just too old for that anymore.

Thanks. I have air tools in my garage so that should help quite a bit. I just need to go buy a transmission jack

You'll want a full set of e-torx, very long extensions (1/2" drive; 2 and 3 feet long), and a lot of beer or other appropriate lubricant. I highly recommend replacing the pressure plate bolts, and be careful not to overtorque those.

Some clutch kits come with the alignment tool, some don't. You need this item.

I'd replace the pilot bearing too; it will not come with the kit.

You might consider replacing the slave cylinder and the ball pin (part #5 in http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=21_0227).

Thanks for that RealOEM site link. It's really helpful. I just wish I had a lift instead of doing this under jack stands.

i agree, it'd be worth finding a lift. some places will rent lift time. also, are you a BMW CCA member? Many chapters have DIY programs, and, there's usually at least one member that has a lift.

    Dual Mass Flywheel
Clutch Kit (includes alignment tool, throw out bearing, clutch fork)
    Pilot Bearing
    Ball Pin
    Pressure plate bolts
    Flywheel bolts
    Bell Housing Aluminum Bolts

    Anything I'm missing?
