I have done something dreadful.
I was able to get a Schwaben Foxwell scanner, and it interfaces to the 20 pin round port under the hood nicely.
It was able to read the VIN, and all modules came up to scan the 850ci (My car wont work with the DIS since
it needs the original ADS serial interface on the laptops).
I saw a bunch of DME errors, and this is related to another problem i am having with the car that I want
to fix(Car has been running with these errors for 3 years now, with Check Engine light on).
While playing with the scanner, i went into the "Reset adaptations" for the DME, and selected the
options to reset and relearn throttle position and Pedal Position.
Immediately, the high pitched hum from the throttles stopped, and the Scanner kind of froze up.
I unplugged the 20 pin port and attached it back, and realized the scanner is unable to talk to the Car now.
I tried starting the car, and the EML light is on, and car starts, and stays in idle. It won't respond
to Gas Pedal position. The car goes into Drive and Reverse, and drives at the idle speed of under 1000rpm
on my driveway with no response to Gas Pedal.
These are the things I have done:
1. Disconnected battery overnight.
2. Unplugged both the DMEs, and the EML computer also.
Still, the car's response is the same.
Now, when I turn the key to Ignition position, i can see hear the hum from the throttles, EML light
is ON, and car starts up, but won't respond to Pedal position.
Is it the EML module itself ? There is a EML Relay buried under wires I think next to the EML and DME
modules.
I was tired playing with different parts trying to debug this problem, so taking a break now. I need this
car up and running asap. Any help appreciated. Thanks!!
Try to get (borrow) a EML module. I had a similar issue with my car. I borrow one for Tom Carter "wuffer" to test my car and then bought it once the car diagnosed. Get in contact with him. He will give a good deal if that is the problem.

Yes, you have done something dreadful unfortunately.
By selecting reset adaptation you have bricked your EML, it's a well known problem.
Never ever click on reset adaptations on M73 powered E38 or E31.
Cor, all doom and gloom here today!
Try the throttle reset routine - this often works after an accidental adaptations clear:
1. Turn ignition to position 2, wait 3-5 seconds
2. Push the throttle pedal all the way down and activate kick down switch, hold it for 3-5 seconds
3. Let off the pedal completely, wait 3-5 seconds
4. Push the throttle pedal all the way down and activate kick down switch, hold it for 3-5 seconds
5. Let off the pedal completely, wait 3-5 seconds
6. Turn off ignition, wait at least 10 seconds.

Glad it worked out for you, it nearly always does in this situation. Goodness knows how many EML modules have been thrown away for no reason at all!

The Foxwell scanner now can't scan the E31 anymore. Car works as before, with its problems.
I plug the Foxwell scanner in, via the 20 Pin Round port adapter, it powers up, and then
goes into Automatic VIN reading and it can't connect to the Car. It was able to do this
before. Is there some Fuse between the 20Pin Port and the EML ?
I checked the Scanner, and it can scan my E60 and N90.
I have two 20 pin adapters, and both are unable to scan. So, its not the problem
with the cables or the scanner.
I checked the Voltage on all the pins of the 20 pin Port under the hood, and some are at 11+V,
Some at 10+V, few at 1.5+ Volts, etc.
The communication with EML is broken now.
I will unplug the EML and both the DMEs again, and check it.
Anything else I can look at ?
Returned the schwaben scanner, and bought a foxwell NT510, and able to scan the car now.
