    e46 330xi suspension replacement

    Hello all,

New to the BMW world with the purchase of an 01 330xi. It's in pretty good shape overall, one issue; I hear a "clunk" when letting out the clutch and found reports of bushing degradation. Dropped the rear sub-frame, bushings mostly look ok but I did find a broken rear spring at the first coil. Not thinking the coil was the clunk but it obviously needs to be replaced. Needs struts, springs, shocks, bushings, etc. I do not want to lower it, in fact I'd entertain a mild lift. We're a family of off-road enthusiasts including rally and this is the style we are aiming at. Big advantage, the roads here in CA absolutely SUCK! I've looked a little and am asking to lean on the experiences from you, I appreciate it! Leads to my question. What suspension to put under this car?

I would speculate that 99% of the members posting in ST&H are seeking a lowered suspension focused on performance,
first time I've seen a request for a lifted suspension!
Considering the vehicle is an xi, I would recommend you refresh the suspension with stock components.

I did notice the mainstream desire to lower and I admit I generally like to reach outside the box every now and then. With all wheel drive and great weight and power distribution I think this car might be an absolute blast to set up and drive on the slippery stuff.

Check the rubber bushing that is on the transfer case, it's on the driver's side of the case.
When doing replacement springs, see if you can opt for thicker rubber pads - I know in e36 world you could get a few variants that differ in thickness. You could also look into cars in europe that were specc'ed out for "rough roads" - they made have taller springs too.
