unable to set the clock on my 2008 328i

After a somewhat cold spell (at least for here in California) I find that I am unable to set the time on my car. All I see is -- : -- and my usual attempt to set the time (on the side radio panel) doesn't work. I tried someone s suggestion of pushing the rocker button on the turn indicator but now that just cycles through some German phrases! Any ideas?
