Has anyone actually broken or heard of a m30 breaking rods under FI? I am already a ton of money into parts for my upcoming final (hopefully) build. I realize the logic of "if your already in there, might as well". The extra $1000 doesn't seem too bad as the will come with ARP bolts and new bearings. I know I should buy forged rods to go with the forged pistons, but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on these.
If the motor is already apart you know you are going to turn up the boost. Buy the rods now. While ytou have the motor apart deck the block it tends to seal the head and block together so you will not go through as many head gaskets. Good luck on the build.
if he has not had any severe issues....decking the block is not needed....
if the builder follows the proper torque sequence and uses the right materials when putting the head and block together properly he should have no sealing issues......the rods however are a different story.
The stock M30 rods will not break if you stay under 700 crank hp. 617bhp is the most anyone tested with stock rods here in sweden, i belive it was 1,7bar boost pressure.
I see far more complaints of broken ring lands on M30's than those of broken rods, FWIW.
I don't think you need rods but I can't say it'd hurt. $1000 is a bit of change - you should shop around. I would definitely invest $1,000 in the valve train of that thing though.
Valve train covered...thanks Pat
I think I will break down and buy the rods. Best I found was $912 from Australia.
If I need to bore my block to 92.5 mm to fit my forged pistons, how do I match my MLS to that?

most MLS are over sized a couple MM anyway. For instance a MLS for an M50 is not 84mm opening, its like 87 or so.
You'll get forged rods for about 898,83 USD here in Sweden.
stock rods are good for 617rwhp, i know some M10 2.0L with 500hp thats 125hp/Cyl so 750hp in a M30 is possible, i´m building a 800hp 3.2L with stock rods just to find the limit

Slow in turbo 528i thanks to a poor driver and lots of heat soak (I couldn't figure out how to drive a pucked clutch off the line to save my life).
LM7 swap in progress/paused pending garage remodel.

M10 rods and M30 rods are very similar if not the same.
Good & Tight bent M10 rods at 29psi with a Holset and Nitrous. So there's that. I'd get rods if you cared about weight but not unless you were pushing serious pressure. With either an M10 or an M30 rods are the last thing I'd spend money on. $1000 can do you so much.
Holy old post batman!!! Car is broken down in boxes. Unfortunately I drive a STI type R and a GTR now.
I used forged rods from Australia. 5th build failed at 29.5 PSI with HX55. Ran out of machine shop support on my god forsaken island.
All parts are boxed up for 2012 rebuild with proper machining, meth, and nitrous.
It will live again, looking for low 10's with a 60 year old tractor motor.LOL

No update to mention. I retired from the USAF in 2015 and opened my own shop in Utah.
We do restorations and full service. Right now the Bimmer is still in boxes and we are soon to fire our 82 F350 holmes tow truck.
