    Bmw 120i

    Hi fellas
I have done a scan on my car and its showing a couple of codes
    1. 2E26 ignition coil cylinder #3
    2. 2A70 valvetronic plausibility, sporadic current fluctuations
Question : if there are current fluctuations would this cause some sensors to missread and show a fault also
    Car is a 2005 120i 87,000 miles
    Thanks

Personally, I'd want to read those codes and then follow the test schedule with ISTA, BMW's own diag system. The coil is easy enough: replace it. In fact, I'd recommend replacing all 6 coils, and while you're there, all 6 plugs, with OEM parts.

It would be good to let ISTA run the test schedule on the valvetronic code....but, well...it's a motor....it's setting amperage codes....and it's not an expensive part.

Chris, he only would need 4 coils as BMW started making the 2.0l a 4-cylinder in those cars.

After replacing the coil or coils, if you don't want to revisit failing coils, clear the codes and see if the valvetronic comes back.

Thanks again, Darin...that's TWO things I learned from you today! This one I can blame on not knowing a Euro market car....should have looked it up and seen it was an N46 before I called for six coils and plugs!

That is what we are here for, to learn from each other!

Yeah the euro market can have some odd balls floating around. Some of those cars would sell quite well in the U.S. IMO but it wouldn't show the Luxury brand that BMWNA chases. My son's 2015 114i is like the base model that you can get from BMW, and it still has the analog HVAC, no I-Drive, cloth seats, but it is a good starter car for a college kid.

That sounds like a car I'D like, with none of the crap that causes problems ! Now, if only they'd make it with an S14 !

I can say the only real convince is the keyless entry and power windows, and it's a 6-speed. That little motor can be tweaked with a tune to push out 200bhp as it is a 1.6l with a little turbo, but I don't plan on doing that as it already gets something like 40 MPG and can go 140 MPH given enough autobahn. Not real quick off the line, but just as fast as the wagon so it can hold its own.

That car is pretty cheap and would give KIA a run in small cars, but again BMWNA isn't going to bother as sedans are already going out of the American market.

Yes, if you have the auto start/stop it will, even with the analog HVAC. At times you will see codes that were stored a long time ago, that is why we always recommend writing every one of them down, and then rechecking about a week later to see which ones come back.

This one actually has a mechanical waterpump , but is still showing a fault code for auxiliary water pump? Any just an update on my last post , i changed the 4 coils as the engine was runing a bit lumpy and was getting fault codes for voltage fluctuations for tbe valvetronic , car is now running nice on idle and no voltage fluctuation codes for the valvetronic or the dme .also auto gearbox improved 100%

Go to www.realoem.com and enter the last 7 characters of the car’s vehicle identification number (VIN). Hit enter and bookmark the page. Scroll down to engine and check for an auxiliary water pump.

James, I am not talking about the motor's waterpump, this one is for the HVAC, the heater. That is why I had asked about the auto start/stop feature, as those cars will have one. Typically they are found on the passenger side frame rail on the right hand drive cars if I remember correctly.
