It seems my blower motor is going squeaky on me. In an effort to prevent my project going up in flames (literally) I want to get it replaced.
I want to replace it with an OEM part, but I can't seem to find the Meyle motor anywhere. The BMW branded one is $400, which isn't ideal.
Did Meyle stop making the motor? Can a different model's blower motor swap in okay?
Thanks in advance.

I got a blower motor from parts geek, install was pretty simple albeit tedious. It took me about an hour and half start to stop, i took my time. Budget 2 hours if you havent done too many DIY's and are just starting out.

Three years ago I got a Behr (OEM) for ~$130. About that time I found that VDO, available through Autozone, was made in China.
autohausaz presently has the ACM on sale for $100.65 https://www.autohausaz.com/catalog/c...limate_control

Two years ago I bought this one for $53 shipped. It's still working fine.

And it has a 10 year warranty.

You can get a Behr for a pretty decent price. It's about $280 AUD delivered which is roughly about $200 USD. Sometimes it's worthwhile to pay that little bit extra, Behr is an OEM parts provider too so the quality is guaranteed. Some of the cheaper aftermarket blower fans can be a bit noisey from what I've read but it all comes down to how much that would bother you.
Behr outsources to china too. Put a Behr and a "cheap" aftermarket side by side and I'll bet you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Does the Behr come with a written 10 year warranty?

If you can manage to remove the blower cages intact the motor(alone)sold(~$100) for MB 190s works with a minor modification.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
If you are worried about a warranty, a good option is to buy the part thru FCP Euro - Lifetime Warranty.

I installed an aftermarket blower motor a while back and I regret the decision. The aftermarket one has a much louder fan noise than the OEM one does. I compared the two and noticed that the OEM fan cages have rounded ends on the inner edges of the blades while most aftermarket ones have straight, sharp edges. I believe this is why the aftermarket one is louder.
If noise is a concern for you, perhaps have a close look at the fan cages. If not, just go with a decent-quality aftermarket brand.
Pelican lists OEM BMW fan at $215. Not sure how they can offer it at half everyone else sells at but that would be my choice here.

So what exactly is failing in blower motor? I start hearing whistle on 2nd fan speed. Is it blower motor?
I was curious if there is way to rebuild those. We can change brushes, but what is the other stuff needed?
It's the bearings in the motors that wear out.. bearings start to drag, requiring more torque and thus more current to run. The wiring is fused wrong so current melts wires, fires start......
A squeaking/whistling noise is usually the bearings going bad, for safety you should switch the blower fan fuse down to a 15A or 20A fuse. E34 blower fan fires are very real and I've seen more than a few go up because of it.
They're not really fixable. I learned that the hard way by having it removed and fixed, but it just failed again 6 months later. Another OEM fan will last the lifetime of the car, being that the original OEM fans have a pretty good run of over 25 years and a new one should last roughly the same.
Yikes. Mine chirps on speed 4. I don’t want a fire.
Don't leave it too long. The lubing will help it for now but it will go bad again in a few months.
It's best not to put it on 4 in that case and you should definitely change the fuse. Putting it on speed 4 actually bypasses the fuse too so it essentially removes the safety of stopping it if the draw is too high and causes it to overheat.
