    Brake fluid leak

Have been losing brake fluid. The brake fluid reservoir wobbles and wet at the bottom. My guess is it is leaking at where the reservoir connects to the master cylinder.

Parts catalog show the grommet part number is 34311163464. Can this part be obtained at a local parts store?

How do you detach the reservoir from the master cylinder?

    Thanks

The plastic container just pops out of the grommets, a little careful prying. Just order the grommets from the dealer or fcpeuro. Remember brake fluid removes paint yet washes off with water

I think I have the same problem with my E34. Do I need to bleed the brakes once I replace the grommets?

    Thanks

You can try replacing the grommets, and not bleed. If you have not gotten air in to the system, it will be ok. If the leak has allowed air to get into the sealed part of the system, you will need to bleed. Get an old / cheap turkey baster, and get as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible. I strongly suggest BMW oe parts, or from the manufacturer of the master. ( likely ATE ).

As long as you don't touch the brake pedal while you're changing the grommets and the pedal still feels normal when it's all done, there should be no need to bleed. But of course, if you don't know how old the fluid in the system is, it won't hurt to bleed it anyway.

I just got the grommets from FCP. $0.99 each plus $10 shipping. Local dealer wanted $15 for each.

Any ways, I am having trouble removing the reservoir from the master cylinder. It is very wobbly but I think that the two clips on the bottom of reservoir holding it. I am unable to spread the clips. No room to reach it w/out removing the master cylinder. Any suggestions? Is it safe the cut the clips and then use zip ties to secure the reservoir after replacing the grommets?
