My wife pulled the key out slot and broke clips that hold the key in reader. It stills runs starts etc. But I need to change the reader I found one on ebay but if I buy one does it need to be programmed for my key??

Hello and welcome to the forum! Correct, the key fob does need to be programmed. You're able to do this yourself if you like (youtube has quite a few videos) or you can have the dealer do this. Please let us know if you have any other questions or if we can assist with any future part needs.
