I found a descent convertible to/frame and all for my 88, BUT there is a big slit in the plastic window....can a new window be "stitched in"?
I remember something about Miata window from years ago...is this still a viable solution?

I think the window zips in
The rear window on mine was stitched in ... don't know if it was the original top or not. My rear window was in bad shape too, and I was thinking of just replacing the window, but I found other damage to the top that required replacing the whole top.
My new top (purchased from eBay - American company in California) has a glued / bonded-in rear window ... don't know if that's a possibility for you.
All the e30 convertibles I've seen have sewn in rear windows. Maybe some of the last E30's with the electric top had them - never saw one of these either.
Ok looks like later models had zip-in windows, earlier models were sew in. Not sure of the cut-off.

Thanks! also an '03 M-Sport?
Back on topic- I did find this about converting to zip-in

This is disappointing, I now realize my car has sewn-in, I've had a new window on the to-do list and thought it would be a zip-in affair. It seems the cut off was 9/91 from sewn to zipper.

A good convertible top shop will be able to source and stitch in a replacement window, assuming it can be done.
I assume they'd also inspect and point out any other issues, and suggest remedies up to and including top replacement.
If you haven't already installed the new frame and top, they'll probably give you a quote for that, too.
Here in Seattle I went to Convertibles Only. Your area probably has a few good top shops to pick from.
The thing about replacing the rear window is that in order to do a proper stitch job you have to remove the top to so it really isn't practical. I rescued a late model cabrio that had a nice factory canvas top with a zip in so I swapped it with mine and bought a replacement window from emiata.com. They were local to me at the time so I did a will call and would happily do business with them again.
