Hey Gentleman,
I got out of the Lincoln Mark VIII business, bought a 1988 MB 300SE about a year ago and its time to get my 850i running again been mothballed for about 2 yrs? .....starter whirs but does not engage...Is it easiest to get it out by dropping the exhaust system...probably the solenoid(?) also somwhere in all the posts hereI recall a DIY diagnostic using a thinkpad and associated software...saw it used in Wichita by Iceman...Good to be back and yes Roger another CSI(?) you obsessed Cheers...time for a cupof tea/can of pilsner... Gawd I forgot how clunky this forum software is....

Hopefully you have bought a couple of new batteries or have kept the original ones on charge for those two years as a poor battery WILL cause the starter just to whirr.....
