New Beater!! Front tire rub with angle question

Grabbed a new e36 m54 stroker beater to clean up and run this season! Got a couple issues I’m currently sorting through, maybe y’all can help.

    Here is the front setup:
    Coilovers / Camber Plates
    e46 front lower control arms
    Angle adapters for knuckles
    bumpsteer correctors
    Tie rod extensions.
    Style 81. 17x8 et20 - 235-45-17.

I know I’ll have to raise, but badly rubbing wheel well and frame before hitting control arm.

What size tire and wheel offset should I be running with this setup for max angle without rubbing like I am?

Fenders are cut for overs so I’m not worried about em sticking out.

Thanks for the help! So tempted to ditch this and just go slr once everything else is finished..

I believe the consensus is a 225/40 or 45 and as close to 0 offset as possible with angle mods.

Do they make a 225/40 for 17? I can’t find any or I’d jump on that. Worried the 45 may be too tall

Make sure to dial out camber and get a proper alignment. That helps a ton.

Way too tall and wide of a tire for a front runner.

Exactly what I’m thinking. With +0 and a raise, I’m still rubbing a little. What size do you recommend? 225/45, 215/45, or 215/40?

    currently a 235/45

    I run a 235/40r17 on 17x11 ET20 with a 30mm spacer for -10 effective with SLR on an E46.

I just realized that i dont know for sure what size my tire is up front! I THINK its 215/40 18 (18s for the style!) the wheels are +35 and I run 30mm spacers put front, putting me at an effective +5. Im on SLR super, and I had to limit my rack a smidge. I still get about 60* of angle.
Keep it simple: half gutted '01 330i, welded diff, BC coils, SLR Super kit

Yeah with 400hp and probably 265/275 rears - all of which is total overkill for a stock M54. I still run 205 fronts on 8” wide wheels and I’m at 375whp right now - still working just fine.

Well it looks like a 215 is my only bet if I wanna run a 40 height. If I could run a 45 I’d run 225 but they don’t make a 225/40 for a 17. I’m stuck. Guess trying a set of 215/40’s and if I have plenty of clearance I’ll run 215 or 225/45’s

wcen after raising my 235/45 rubs everywhere!

What are you alignment specs? The e46 is really happy with only -3 degrees of camber, which isn't much, in terms of drifting. Where are you rubbing? Front frame rail, rear frame rail? Front corner of the fender?

When I put SLR on, I had to pull the front half of my fenders pretty remarkably.

I did clear 225 wide tires, but I hadn't set my rack stops yet so the frame rails tore the entire inner sidewall out of my tires. On the new set I went 215 because 215 gives me all the grip up front I could possibly need, with my stock m54b30. Plus, a little more clearance never hurts.

I have to agree that for stock power, 235 is overkill. You'd have to have your front tires at 60+ psi to stop you from just spinning around them constantly. on 225's I was running my fronts at 50psi, and with the 215's I'm running 40 psi in the fronts still, on Indy 500 tires. Too much front grip is a bad thing!

Haven’t gotten it aligned just yet but it seems pretty level as the previous owner was using it as a daily as well.
Rubbing top rear of wheel well, then rear frame when on ground. Rubs front frame when I have the front end lifted off the ground.
Fenders are cut for overs so I’m not worried about my +O offset up front.

When you went 215, did you go 40 or 45 height?

exactly right, I want the scrub some! Too much front grip can be hell.

hey.. thanks for the help awp!!!

Not sure why last nights reply didn’t work!

Have an aligned it myself yet, but previous owner used it as a daily as well so it’s oretty level up front currently.

When on on the ground it rubs top of rear wheel well and the rear frame section

in the air it hits frame front and rear at full turns but doesn’t touch wheel well.

yea way too much front grip currently! I need it to scrub some, not over grip and spin.

You really just need to space the wheels out. I run 17x8-25 and even with 205/45 I would have rubbing issues. Stock arms, angle adapters, 5mm rack spacers, GC roll center adapters. I switched to 40 series and now I’m good. I also slam the shit out of my car at the track because I like the way it looks much better in photographs - drifting is just as much about car style as it is about everything else.

Thanks for the help guys! Looks like I now clear frame with +0 offset and a 215/40/17..

currently hitting the e46 control arms. Guess I’ll have to figure out a steering rack stop until I can get modified 36 arms or an slr kit!
