I'm selling my94 525I and I don't know what to price it at. Some background:
Cranks, no start.
Needs a battery
Automatic transmission
About 265k miles on it.
Needs a lot of cosmetic work.
Paid registration($116, probably shouldn't expect to get that back)
Needs to pass smog.
I was thinking $500, but I don't know if that's too much or too little.
Any input would help.
Thanks.
Put it on Craiglist at $1k and see what fish you catch.
You'd have a lot more luck selling it if it ran. A non starting higher mileage cosmetically challenged autotragic 525 is essentially a parts car....
I agree with listing it at $1000 but I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it, less if it's rusty.
Have you investigated why it won't run? There are lots of simple things that could be your problem.
Having said that and in answer to your question; The car is worth a few hundred bucks IF you find someone looking for a non-running, cosmetically challenged 25 year old car that might not pass smog. Otherwise it's around $120 a ton
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
This isn’t going to go for more than 500
Agreed: non-running, it's a $500 parts car at best. Recommend putting some effort (not necessarily money; cross that bridge when you get there) into getting it running. If it cranks, why does it need a battery?
Simple test that requires no money, 15 minutes, basic tools and a set of jumpercables: remove one sparkplug (after removing the plastic engine cover and then one ignition coil), reinstall it in the ignition coil, reconnect the ignition coil's connector, clamp the sparkplug threads with one end of a jumper cable and connect the other end to a good ground point, such as the rear hood latches or the engine hanger bracket. Hold this assembly away from the cylinder and crank the engine. Is there spark? Is there fuel vapor shooting out of the sparkplug hole? 4 out of 5 times in a no-start situation, one or both will be absent. Do that, post what you find, and we'll go from there.
I remember you were chasing a surging idle, asking about relay locations, and posting that it failed smog. What's happened since?

I don't want to fix the car. I already bought a new one and don't have time to keep fixing it. I'm going to miss it, but I had to do what I needed.
Why don't you break it for parts? Probably come out ahead.
