Hi guys, ccv failed when I tried to leave work last week...tried keeping the car running at first but just kept smoking, shuddering and stalling. I had it towed home and replaced the CCV with a new one and new pipes over the weekend. I also replaced the spark plugs figuring not only where they 60k miles old but also the burning oil event could not have done them any favors. Well I started the car and it still smoked and stumbled and billowed a few clouds until it warmed up. Once warm it idled fine with no significant smoke. I took it for a drive and all seemed ok. The next day I started it cold and it smoked again and would not idle I revved it and restarted it for about a minute and finally it cleared up...I left it idling for 15 mins...no issue. My question is what could be causing the smoking at cold start when I have the whole new CCV circuit? Is this residual oil elsewhere that’s still being burned up? It seems like it’s worst when cold and at low rpm. Thanks - Nate
Use a smoke machine check for vacuum leaks. Smoke on cold startup is typically valve stem seals. Smoke otherwise might be piston rings.
Dang...looks like you are correct...all my symptoms are identical to those of bad stem seals...wish I looked deeper into that before assuming it was CCV.
Depending what weight oil you are running you could try a slightly higher number
