2019
Lower radiator hose blew so waiting on new hoses, radiator and fan clutch to arrive. Figure now is a good time to replace them all. Water pump is 1yr old so no need.
Don's E38 1.jpgPicked up the '01 Black from the detailer, clay barred and talked me into 'ceramic coating'...should have known better, a hand-rubbed PS2 carnubajob looked just as good. "But it'll last for ages!"... yeah, right.
To top it off, glove box latch was broken, driver's seat switch mount mashed and connector broken. He was warned, "don't screw with the glovebox, and be careful in and out. Switch plate is fragile". Wasted words.
Never again will any mofo lay hands on my E38.

It turns out that my "seized" water pump was do to the lower timing cover bolt that's behind the pump coming loose and then eventually stopping the impeller. Took the sucker out, put some thread locker (blue) on it and back in it went! Then the gasket got messed up and started leaking like a sieve from the bottom area. Need a new gasket!

I finally got my alternator rebuild kit! Pulled the alternator, found out it was smoked pretty good, rebuilt it carefully and crossed my fingers.
In the process found three more wires the fuzzy bunny ate, twisted yellow ones going to my right headlight under the air box.
There was also a soft, deformed o ring in the connector on the hose from the bottom of the radiator to a cooler under the engine, I noticed none of the other connectors have o rings. I found one that actually fit and it didn't leak- win I guess lol.
I will post pics.
When I started the car, it ran rough (no batt light though woo hoo!) I puttered around until it warmed up and got the antifreeze level right. Turned it off, started it again, took it for a drive- CEL started blinking, then it stayed on solid, ran rough. Back home hooked up the scan tool, still no OBD2 communication ugh! Started it back up- boom, runs fine, no CEL. Must have had a learning curve for the pcm after being without a battery for so long.
Little by little I'm getting the scrap Bimmer sorted out!
First pic is smoked alternator, second is what my scantool reads, third is my cleaned engine bay, last is freshly washed .

Still in the process of bringing my newly acquired 95' 750il back up to par. So far in 2019 I've put in a fresh set of plugs, wires, caps and rotors, all new filters, trans flush, wheel bearings, abs sensors, mufflers and about a thousand other assorted grommets, clips and bushings! Also just had a full detail done (21 hours of work), had some fresh ceramic tint installed and swapped the style 4's that were on the car for some style 5's (would like to find some m-pars in the near future).
"smoked alternator".....
Yes, I would say it is!
Broke a big chunk off of my front bumper pushing my roommates Volvo wagon off the highway after the engine blew up.

Had a windscreen replacement under insurance by Autoglass after picking up a stone chip on the motorway over the Christmas holiday. The tech was drooling over the car, which has just reached 20,000 miles on the tachometer. He did a great job and the car is back in A1 condition again.
Not today but Sunday wrapped up the cooling system. Replaced:
Upper/Lower hose- Rein
Fan clutch- Behr
Expansion tank hose- Rein
Radiator- Behr
Coolant temp switch- OE
Expansion tank/level sensor/cap/brass bleeder screw- Behr
Was actually a very easy process with the quick connects. Surprised how easy the radiator came out and went back in. Almost too easy
Still need to bleed it one more time. My bleeder screw broke which is why I had to buy the brass one and I think the old one was letting air in. I’ll do that tonight and get to drive it again. Pics were taken before bleeding process
Did a compression test. Installing new spark plugs.

Posted it for sale! Still have a lingering issue with bleeding the coolant system but it’ll be fixed tmrw with vacuum bleeder
Got really annoyed at the E38. I hosed the salt off it this morning only to have a couple spots of clear coat on the passenger door suddenly fail (hadn't seen any issues previously) and flake off. So now that door is going to need to be painted... Oh well, at least it's an opportunity to have a shop fix the slight misalignment on it (it sits perfectly at the top but it's tweaked out a hair at the bottom back, not sure if the door is bent).
