Contacted the seller who IMO was less than helpful. My motto is you buy the former owner... Instead of answering any question I asked they just kept telling me to search for a video on YouTube. Could be a great car, but as someone who is out of state not worth the headache.
And not only has it been for sale for a long time, but IMO, it's way overpriced. I talked to the guy before I bought mine and opted out of bothering to look at it in person. He wants $9k for a car that's been sitting for several years outside without being driven (based on the video he pointed me to that was taken 1.5 years ago, car had no plates, looked like it had been sitting for a while). And as ChaoticSquare mentioned, the owner pretty much was just doing the "watch the video, the price is the price" kind of thing, he wasn't really a good seller to talk to. IIRC, the issues were one of the side mirrors has peeling clearcoat, glovebox latch is broken and maybe one or 2 more things plus the concerns from sitting.
If he were asking $6k for it that would be one thing, but at $9k it's just not worth it (and the price hasn't changed for quite a while, and from the impression I got talking to him, he doesn't really care if it keeps sitting). I'd expect to need to rebuild the brakes (at least pads, rotors and slide pins) after sitting outside for that long, plus probably a few other things. And the peeling clear coat is a big concern IMO (means other areas of the car might be heading in that direction too). Plus it's an early 01 with the MKII and 4:3 display too.

Yup, $9200 and a near mint AZ car (unlike the $27,500 car with 20k less miles, but almost all its life in Minnesota - look at the undercarriage shots on BaT).
I was heart broken when the guy emailed me at 7am this morning that he already had a deal pending. I offered to buy the all weather mats separately from the car, but he didn't respond to that one... I think it could have been a $15k-$20k BaT car for sure... We'll probably find out soon enough lol (as Clarkitect said).
I guess. Good to know. I guess only time will tell. Most likely gonna re sell it then, unless going into a personal collection.
Why would you ask to just buy the mats? Dang bet youre kicking yourself considering you may have had a chance at it.
I dont know if you texted me yet Chamberlin, but sorry if you did, been so busy, but I dont think i saw any texts from you yet though.
Yea, typically the $10k 740i Sports are primo collector/driver cars, whereas the bulk of the remaining ones worth buying sit in the $3500-$6000 range. But I, like many of you, have been following these cars very closely for the last few years and can spot a gem when I see one. With a paint correction, fixing up of little things, professional photos, and the right marketplace (i.e. BaT), this one will be a solid investment piece. Maybe not doubling the money, but I'm guessing close to it. I'm not into flipping cars myself, and have never made any real money selling the short term BMWs I've had (usually just getting parts from them or fixing them up for fun). This one however, being local, and me being in E38 mode while restoring my car, and it checking all the boxes (except the all important Oxford Green one lol), would have been a solid opportunity to finally feed some money back into my BMW madness.
Regarding the all weather mats, they are rare and I've had them in other E38s and really like them. His looked in great shape too. I'd prefer to put those in my car vs. trying to find a new set of beige carpet mats. Since the Steel Blue car had nice original mats already in it, I thought maybe he'd let the rubber ones go separately.
I didn't get your phone number BTW, so I definitely didn't text you...just the PM
With you as well. I didnt know the mats are that rare? I found a set in a well maintained E38 I bought with 300k on it. they need a cleaning, but i put them in my 2001 sport MT6.
What are they worth?
Why do the mats not fit the back ? they are wayyyy to small. why would they make them like that?
Since you guys are up to date with the value of these things, do you think Im asking too much for mine? I have it listed at $7000 but would settle $6500, which is what I have it posted here for.

There is always someone scouring craigslist trying to buy one for 2k or less and sell for 6500...
