So, I'm looking at installing an aftermarket stereo with bluetooth. I'm leaning toward a Kenwood KDC-BT375U.

It's got the features I want including variable color display to match the BMW interior lighting. I also hope it looks subtle enough not to look out of place. Right now, I've got the entire interior apart and will be putting it back together in a few weeks. So, it's an opportune time to figure out and install a stereo including mic and the wiring. Although it may be best to do it now, I'll be addressing the speakers later.
Any suggestions for placement of the microphone to ensure good hands free calling? Thanks.
I have a handsfree mic at the top of the A pillar. I figured it was the nearest place to my mouth! I've used it with no problems, even with the roof down.

You can run wire up and through that 'dead panel' and out like shown here - this is what I did except I leave my microphone lodged in the dead panel space - after removing the dead panel.

+1 top of the A pillar:
There is a tiny pop-out panel (0.5" by 1.5" maybe) to the right of the steering column and up a bit. I popped that out, made a tiny indent for the wire and mounted it there.
Zed's dead baby. Zed's dead.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Between the A pillar and the pop out panel by the steering wheel, it looks like I have a couple of good options.
