    2005 530i Low Compression Question

What's up Fellas....I bought a sexy 2005 530i for 600.00 a month ago. I have no driving history on it except, It was purchased in this crank no start condition from offerup. I have one "po1315 intake cam signal malfuction" engine code that sets immediately after cranking. I changed the intake and exhaust cam sensors and also the crank sensor with dealer sensors, cleaned vanos solenoids, new fuel pump, spark plugs, coils and oil change. I was hoping these may correct my problem before I began dissecting but nah....

Since I had a Cam signal error. I removed my valve cover for a visual inspection but didn't notice anything broken, re-installed and then rented a compression tester. My cold/dry test are as follows.
C1-50 C2-0 C3-65 C4-70 C5-70 C6-70... My Wet Test were 20lbs less down the line which was odd to me.

Yesterday, I removed my intake manifold to see there function and inspect. I would appreciate some advice, information or share some wisdom before I remove my exhaust manifold and the Cylinder head. It's just hard for me to commit to a head job while the coolant and oil aren't mixing.... I just wanna diagnose the problem first before I do anything to costly that may not even correct my problem. Thanks for any and all replies and Happy New Year!

I did notice something pretty odd about the fuel pump function when I turn the key to let's say position 2 or before the start position it doesn't activate. But when I turn the key to position 3 "start position" the pump is running the whole time until I release the key. I've had the car running for maybe 10 seconds with the fuel pump disconnected it's almost as if I don't have enough spark to combust. I didn't wanna dwell on that to long so I checked compression and foundthis low compression problem.

If that 0 compression on cyl. 2 is true, and it will run, then it suggests a broken rocker.

I did test that cylinder 3 or 4 times. It's in a no start condition for the most part. What would you do to correct it? Can one bad rocker cause low compression all the way down the line? Thanks for replying btw. I didn't know if my post was clear enough.

Focus on cylinder 2. Nothing else matters. Pull the valve cover and look for a valve that is hung open. If this is the case, figure out what's wrong. If you're lucky you have a broken valve spring or valve train that's jammed the valve open. If nothing looks wrong, rotate the engine by hand and observe correct valve train operation.

If this all checks out, stick a camera scope into cylinder two and look for a hole in the top of piston 2.

Thanks a million Cameron. I will get to it as soon as I get off in the morning. The valve springs are all returning to rest position when not actuated. I will do the valve check intake off.

IMG_0097.jpgOk so I removed both manifolds/catalytic converters and the exhaust port for the #2 cylinder looks like this. I ran out of daylight so I didn't get a chance to inspect the valve and I dunno if I will be able to find a camera/video recorder small enough to fit inside of cylinder but we'll see.

If this is the only manifold port choked with carbon (burnt oil), it is pretty clear to me that #2 is pumping out a ton of oil. Even with broken oil rings (I suspect this is your problem), you should have some compression. Having said that, with that much carbon build up, your valve and valve seat are likely full of carbon and the valve is not seating and sealing. Fixing this problem with engine in the car is unlikely, sorry to say...

10-4 I'm trying all I can atm to get the valve to seat properly. I saw something called chemtool that may get that carbon to dissolve giving that a shot as I type. The piston rings seem to be intact after I added the chemical. I have the #2 cylinder down with the exhaust valve open filled with it. All of the other manifolds had oil in them as well though cats will need replacing. My assumption was to many wet tests from the previous owner on top of my own....

I really don't wanna do a head job im mechanically inclined but the kit for this is costly. Thanks for giving me some much needed advice. Fyi do you have any Idea what could've caused p1315 Intake cam signal malfunction besides wiring and a bad cam sensor?
