    92 Mtech cabrio...with Tesla power

I’m undecided how much effort I really want to put into a build thread, but here’s a few pics. I post for more regularly on instagram, so follow jon_volk if you want to see more.

Car was LS powered, but wanted to try something new.

Short version is a Tesla large drive unit, open source logic board, and two Chevy Volt battery packs

Pics of batteries? Weight of batteries and motor/drive unit? Capacity of 2 battery packs? Expected range? Difficulty of control unit programming? I have many questions!!

Amazing build. My only wish is that you were doing this to an E36 coupe so I could buy it from you when you’re done! Do you have any guesses on how much the batteries weigh? When your YouTube video shows you uncrating them in you driveway, you make them look relatively light (or you’re just really really strong).

The modules range from 80 to 150 lbs each.

Ummm battery powered cars predate internal combustion engine cars. You should probably learn your history of the automobile.

100% Correct. Electricity did predate Internal Combustion Engines in the what would become automobiles. My comment had nothing to do with Electricity vs ICE propulsion, quite the opposite really (Steam vs a Clydesdale). From Wikipedia:

"A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. The steam engine uses the force produced by steam pressure to push a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. This pushing force is transformed, by a connecting rod and flywheel, into rotational force for work. The term "steam engine" is generally applied only to reciprocating engines as just described, not to the steam turbine.

Steam engines are External Combustion Engines, where the working fluid is separated from the combustion products. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle."

In any event, I was attempting to congratulate John on the surgical precision of his build while recognizing the high tech nature of the components vs what the rest of us are doing... John, the Tesla/Volt E30 is awesome and I look forward to each update! Thank you for sharing it with us.

So would that be roughly 700lbs of batteries? And any guesses on what the drive unit weighs?

    Thanks,

    Jacques

Heres a rough estimation from my spreadsheet. This also doesnt take into account stuff like the stock radiator and fan or the cut and sewn carpet with no heavy foam backing.
