Hey all, I usually just read up stuff on here, but I dont really know which direction to proceed, I will update my profile with my new E46 after this post, 2002 325i 212k miles auto, previous owner handed me a stack of receipts when i bought it for over 7k$ in repairs in the last couple years, so the car has been somewhat cared for.
To the issues at hand:
1) Car starts right up, but runs rough, shop tried to tell this guy he needed a new engine, 5k$ was too much so I ended up taking it home for 650$ my gut tells me he was getting hustled.....
2) 212k miles on it, I pulled plugs and most of them didnt look how the books say a clean burning cylinder plug should appear over time, they looked like they had road grime building up on them. They were single electrode ngk so I got 6 oem plugs by bosch and installed them.
3) I cant find the code numbers I pulled at autozone, but 4 codes showed up, misfire cylinder 3, misfire cylinder 6, misfire cylinder 3 with fuel cut off, misfire cylinder 6 with fuel cut off, Swapped coils on both cylinders, pulled connectors off 3 and 6 one at a time with no change in engine operation.
4) SEL is on, Traction light is on as well? triangle in center of cluster? Pressing the DSC button does not do anything, and the ebrake light is yellow constantly. As well as the ABS light? I may be getting the traction and abs confused. I will go double check, Im buying a ok code reader here shortly also.
I just wanted to know what direction you guys think I need to go from here please I appreciate everyones help in advance, thank you.
Update: Just got the code reader I was waiting for, Matco MD1052, for 100$ used it was the best I could get.
Cleared Codes, Started it up and now its running much much smoother, accelerating better, DSC light is still on, and the yellow brake light stays on, then after driving for a few mins the only code coming up now is Misfire cylinder 3 with fuel cut off.

The rough idle and misfires sound like you have vacuum leaks. check the following for cracks, holes and breaks:
- The rubber boots between the MAF to the throttle body and Idle Control Valve. The elbow to the ICV is a prime suspect.
- The hoses to and from the Crank Case Ventilation system. The hose from the valve cover to the CCV and the hose from the CCV to the dipstick tube are common problems
- There are 3 vacuum ports at the rear of the inlet manifold that are either used or capped off. Hard to see them but the caps split and leak
- Check all of the small rubber vacuum hoses to see if they are cracked or broken.
You may need a better scanner to read the DSC/ABS trouble codes. The codes will be there and will tell you where to start looking.
A couple of things to check are:
- brake fluid level
- brake wear indicators on the front and rear wheels (back right and front left by memory)
1999 2.8L Z3 Roadster,
2000 3.0L Z3 Roadster,
There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.
Ok I will check those things, and post any updates, after reading through the forum for the last couple hours, I plan on doing a smoke test with visual inspections, this just came to me, the front of our property has been getting very muddy, so muddy I actually got stuck, when I did, I let some of the air out of my rear wheels, to try and get more traction, so they have to be low......
the coils are all original 2002 is the date they read, I figure I may as well get a new set, the injector rebuild kits are cheap online, i think less than 20 for the kit, so ill grab them also, 1 more thing, the air pump on the passenger side of the car has been making noise that seems a little off, whats the tech term for that unit?> so I can read up on what normal operation for it is?
If I start going through the CCV system, vacuum lines etc, I am kind of leaning towards replacing the system or part of it to run a catch can, or at the least to run the extra vacuum line ive seen mentioned, Id like to maybe chip the car in the near future, maybe cat delete and or down pipe/s in the future, but nothing beyond that, just to give it a little more acceleration, any thoughts on any of those things? I have a 90 e34 and a fresh m50 non vanos I think im going to strip the interior, and boost this summer, so the 02 e46 I want it to be reliable, a little quicker, to use as DD or 4-5 days a week.
I appreciate the feedback, I will do as suggested and report back on what I find, thank you and merry xmas to you..... Oh, Im just north of seattle, do we have any people for the greater seattle area? I think im going to sell the chrome beyverns to fund some of my e34, but I havnt decided just yet, cause they do look pretty good.
Ditch the Bosch spark plugs and install NGK BKR6EQUP plugs.
The first step in diagnosing a problem is to scan the engine computer for codes. Find a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers at www.bimrs.org. That mechanic who said you need a new engine is full of BS.
Ya, these cars will kill the average American financially in repair costs if it has to go to the shop for routine maintenance and simple repairs.
There is a software package called INPA that can be gotten sometimes for free on the web, or for a few bucks on eBay, requires a couple special cables to connect a laptop.
LOL!!! I have yet to find an English version that works on E36, though I have heard it is out there.
I don’t think you need to replace the coils unless you find they are bad, more likely case is that your spark plug extenders are dry/stiff/cracked/leaking voltage.
Swap the number 3 coil and then number 3 fuel injector and observe if the error follows that coil/injector on each set of swaps.
How healthy is the battery, some errors can be set by marginal running voltage.
Be sure your tires are correct size on all four corners and at recommended pressures.
As mentioned check the brake pad wear sensors, those have to be replaced if they are “tripped” (wearing thru the sensor opens the circuit)
206 area code also.

I would not replace early style bolt on coils for pm. You can replace the boots on those which should be done as pm with spark plug changes. Early coils don't fail too much like the newer push in ones. What you buy will most likely be lower quality than the original coils. Since a shop said the engine is bad, I would start with checking compression before replacing anything. You need to find out if the shop was lying/incompetent and the engine is good or if they were honest/correct. Low compression will cause misfiring. Abs/dsc system needs to be checked with bmw specific diagnostic program or scanner but I would not worry about it until you determine if the engine is healthy. Read about what happens to these engines when they are overheated. It's not good.

So I attempted to do a smoke test, and found no leaks, but being my first time doing a smoke test I believe the results are not accurate, I will read up on how to do the test again and attempt it a second time, I ordered the pa 1.4 scanner when I made this post, since my scanner is not even close to as in depth as the PA scanner.
Before it arrived in the mail, after reading through the forums, I cleared my codes, and disconnected the MAF, and could not get it to throw any codes, so im thinking faulty MAF sensor? When it is hooked up after clearing codes I can hear the misfire, then the car shuts of fuel to #3 and runs on 5 cylinders. The only thing that is bothering me, is even with the maf unplugged, codes cleared, the way the engine is running still isnt right, it sounds like a intake leak, or an exhaust leak, because the rpms are not constant, it reminds me of like a small block chevy with some crazy hot cam in it, with the idle turned down, but no where near as extreme as that, but its similar, does that make sense? I can feel the engine running much more than I believe I should be able to at idle.
Here is the data from my new Scanner

# CLEAR DTCS END
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One thing that was weird, I had 3/4 of a tank yesterday or the day before, and I didnt notice before I cleared codes, but after my fuel gauge light was on and it read empty, could I have messed something up on accident?
@ Randy
I will run a compression test tomorrow, I did see a few posts where people had burnt valves, or even valves with pieces broken off, I will post my results tomorrow afternoon.
A reliable smoke test is performed at a shop with a professional smoke machine.
Here is a simple smoketest that's possible,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsgB9eBl58I
when smoke machine unavailable:
So I did a compression test as Randy suggested, and damn, im going to get another tester to verify my results, but after trying to test I couldnt get any of the cylinders to hold compression, when cranking I could see the gauge jumping than instantly dropping, and cylinder 3 wouldnt even do that, I read the horror stories about these engines getting hot, so get to the head bolts and loosen then re torque?
Another note, when I did the test there was milky oil on the tester, thats confirmation then? I did think the exhaust was a little more than normal when reving it a little, but figured it was due to the cold.
So head Gasket? Head warped? Do aluminum heads crack? Ive only seen steel ones crack before, Im looking at the clearences towards the back of the engine, I have time, pneumatics, harbor frieght is up the street, Time to look up and see how hard it is.
LEAVE HEAD BOLTS ALONE!
You have not finished attempting verification of anything yet.
Any oil in radiator? Any coolant in engine oil?
Or are both engine oil and coolant a milk chocolate mess?
First thing is to obtain a verified accurate pressure gauge.
Next perform a new compression test, or better yet, an engine leakdown test.
I was getting ahead of myself, I tend to do that, and while I am better than a lot of people out there when it comes to wrenching, but im still a novice, maybe just above, rebuilt a couple engines, 2 head gaskets, fuel pumps, water pumps, timing chains and belts etc. I like repairing cars when my work slows down, I can usually do anything if I have a good guide to reference for instructions, but the diagnosing aspect, especially with a car after 2000, I couldnt do if it wasnt for forums like this so thank you.
I will continue to follow the instructions and opinions of this forum, to diagnose these problems, while being mindful not to just jump into doing something that has not been verified.
The PO said he spent like 3k$ on a coolant system overhaul like 1 year ago, then the entire front suspension done 6 months ago, just more info to give you guys.
when I pull the dip stick out there is no coolant mixed with the oil in the crank case, or in the coolant as far as I can tell, but it was dark by the time I checked, so I will confirm in the morning when I have daylight instead of a halogen , the only place im seeing the milky oil was on the end of my compression tester when I removed it after cranking the engine, I didnt pull the fuel pump relay, but fuel wouldnt cause that to happen would it?
Ok I will research the difference of a compression test and leak down test, I might remember seeing a leak down test kit at harbor freight, if thats the case I will go pick it up tomorrow.
here is a picture of the "milky oil" that came off the end of my compression tester
DSCN1297.jpg
Not good! To me looks like a head job. I would rather find a good used motor easier and cheaper. Just my 10 cents.
