Exclamation Replacing water damaged DME with a used one

I have a 2007 X5 E70. I purchased a used DME from eBay. Both are MSV80, however the new one is from an E90 and my INPA UIF shows it has a zusb of 8619538 (although the case has a sticker with 7602220 on it) which is a higher revision number than anything that winkfp lists for the E70.

I tried choosing update zusb, entering the VIN number and programming, however that does not work.
I tried trying to select zusb and guessing a few times from what I had showing.
Furthest I can get is the start of a progress bar and error 704.

Would there be any use in trying to load up the E90 files in winkfp and at least changing the VIN as well as trying to flash to an earlier version of code, then loading up the E70 files and trying again?

Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas. (yeah my Christmas is being spent with the truck).

The E70 zusb will never match any of the e90 ones, so you have to use an E70 zusb.

Not sure if you are aware, but those DMEs are incredibly difficult to swap with used. It has nothing to do with the VIN. The immobilizer key is what matters, and it's highly secured. You will also run into power class issues, because of using an E90 dme.

If you need help with this, I can clone the original dme into your used one, if the original is somewhat operational.

I appreciate the offer. My original was already sent to SIA electronics for rebut and they said it was "rotted" inside and could not help me.
I am not sure what to do.
Tonight I was able to flash the used one to zusb 7594488 (with my VIN - not that it matters after what you told me). Tomorrow I was going to try to flash again with e70 daten. If that worked then I was going to have a go with insta+ to try and synch the DME and CAS.

If that doesn't work then I have a 2 ton paperweight.

There is no sync of DME and CAS for the MSV80.

Did you have any diag connection at all with original dme? A little bit of corrosion can be washed away, and as long as it can communicate on bench, then the problem can be solved.
    Got pics?

Unfortunately, no prior communication with original DME. It was the $4000.00 repair quote from the dealer that prompted me to purchase the diagnostic software and a used DME.

As for the original I have yet to try and crack it open. I will try and post pictures. I am out of electronic parts cleaner, can I use carb cleaner or something else?

Also, I would not know how to "Bench" connect the original DME. Unless you imply that I try reconnecting to the vehicle harness.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Isopropyl alcohol works well, on unpowered module.

I have recovered a couple of these dead ones, but they weren't swimming in rust, so it depends. It was massive internal shorts, which I had to exchange some components out by soldering.

You can also get a used X5 dme/cas/key set, but this is a little ghetto and may cause a lot of issues.

There are also users (user bawareca here) that can match your CAS module to a used dme, for when the original immo key is lost, etc.

If needed, get me a pic, then I may be able to clone your dme into your used one on bench, if you ship out to me.
MSV80 is particularly nasty to do, but it can work out still.

If I recall correctly, on the X5s the EGS also has EWS enabled, so you pretty much have to have the DME match the CAS without the job becoming rather labor intensive.

I cracked open the DME just now and it is NOT pretty. Several arc sites and quite a bit of rust. I will attach as many of the pictures as I

"https://photos_app_goo_gl/Sh2c5a1Az7ZpLaQ58" I replaced the "." with "_" so that it would not be "*" out.

Oof, I doubt that one will be recoverable. I think your best best will be to match the CAS to the DME. You'll also have to modify the power class for it to work properly with the X5 tune.

Or actually I have a friend who's come up with an EWS delete for these DMEs. I don't think he hangs out on these forums though. If you're on bimmerpost, his username is hassmaschine

Do you need the DME I have to do this?
I have been re-creating my diagnostic setup. Dual-booting so I have a full win 7 install instead of using parallels. Now I can setup DIS and progman. Wondering if that will get me what I need.

Otherwise I need more detail on what your option was.

No your dme at this point is junk for the vin. Just cas and I make dme to match your cas and transmission so car starts in one shot

    Update:

    Recap:
Original E70 DME water damaged tried sending for repair and not possible.
Purchased used E90 DME and was able to change the VIN as well as upload E70 code to it.
I am unable to synch the CAS and DME - tried ISTA-P/+, INPA and DIS

I am very frustrated and out of ideas - also, I am completely new to all of this.

There is no sync of dme for this dme. See post 4.

It takes a more complex procedure to make it work with your car. That's what all these other posts were telling you.
