I just brought this 745i from a second owner who owned the car since 1990. He had a BMW shop do a 5 speed swap in 1993. Any suggestions on where to start?

LOL, I hope it was cheap.
Looks like an early '84 build by the heated seat switches. Extinguisher is neat, factory rear spoiler, and factory alarm. Glass roof. Sport wheel, that style is early. Headlight leveling. Appears to have power rear seats. It may have a rear seat radio. Pre 05/85 Becker radio up front still! That interior used to be nearly black, FYI.
Needs a passenger motor mount. And the PCV breather hose is comical at best... anything that shop 'repaired' I would question. Did the exhaust fall off? It probably has SLS springs of kaput SLS.
Appears it was hit on the LR.
TRX wheels on it are trash. 15s from E34 and E32 are decent for cheap if runs.
Where do you start?
Pull plugs, FOG THE FUCK out of the cylidners with Stabil's foaming agent. Serious. Crank it over by hand to verify free and keep fogging it, if not I would probably just part it out. If free, drain the oil pan, refill with cheap 15W40 from Walmart as there is probably water in it. Lash the valves and verify the camshaft oil bolts are snug, then spin it over with starter with plugs out so it can build oil pressure. Run a compression test, 8:1 static should be 140-150psi/hole. If lower, run a leakdown to see where it is going.
It takes a Group 48 battery. Do not even try to run it on whatever BS fuel is in the tank. If compression decent, have the fuel injectors rebuild and replace EVERYTHING rubber under the hood
I make E23 parts.

10/1984 745i
11/1984 745i

Ford, MB, and GM round out the pack.
Thanks for the advice hit man.

Nice find, good luck getting it back on the road, if thats your plan. Cool that it has the 5 speed swapped in
If you part it out I will take all of the turbo setup for my 1980 745i. It has been parked for two years looking for parts

I would assess the condition of the unibody before committing to spending a lot of money on this. I have had several e23's from northern climates and most of them had some degree of unibody rust that ended up rendering them parts cars. Take a look at the jack points and inner rockers in particular. The body on yours looks pretty good from what I can see but I notice the CT plate (I am from the New Haven area orginally). Good luck!

Welcome to the forum! You have your hands full. Good luck.
Baseline it as with any car & work from there. Lots of patience & cheap wine will go far.
