    Check Engine Light

Hi Folks. I have a 1998 BMW 328i (E-36). I have had a check engine light for the longest time, and it fails N.J. inspection because of this. The trouble code is, from what I can ascertain is: P0240. Below is a summary of the result from DMV:

Primary Emission Test Performed - FAIL

    Bulb Check: PASS
    Check Engine Light: Fail
    OBD Connector: PASS
    OBD Communications: PASS
    MIL Command Status: FAIL
    Overall Readiness Result: FAIL

    OBD SYSTEM - READINESS STATUS

    Engine Misfire - Ready
    Fuel System - Ready
    Comprehensive Component - Ready
    Catalytic Converters - Not Ready
    Heated Catalytic Convertoers - Unsupported
    Evaporative System - Ready
Secondary Air Injection - Not Ready
    A/C Refrigerant - Unsupported
    Oxygen Sensors - Not Ready
Oxygen Sensors - Heaters - Not Ready
    LGR Systems - Unsupported

OBD SYSTEM - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE(S) PRESENT

Total # of codes: 1 Individual Code(s) Present P0240 or P0340 ( I cannot ascertain, as the inspector kind of blurred out the trouble code)

    SECONDARY EMISSIONS TEST(S) PERFORMED:

    Gads Cap: PASS
    Tampering: PASS
    Visible smoke: PASS
    Liquid Leak: PASS
    Indicator Light: FAIL
    Misc. Emissions: PASS

So, I replaced the Cam Position Sensor to eliminate it as a causative action. The engine has 225,000 miles on it, but if you place a glass of water on the valve cover at idle, the engine runs smooth as glass. I perform all of my own service on this vehicle, and it runs as strong as ever, albeit the "check engine" light. I am leaning towards an EWCM issue. I have tested the Cam Position Sensor, and am drawing the required 5. 2 volts. Then I place an "earth ground to it, and it drops down to negligible levels as indicated it should. Scratching my head.... Any ideas before I replace the ECM???

    Thanks brothers....

Put a good brand name sensor in there.
It must be original BMW or Siemens/VDO/Bosch.

Aftermarket ones fail again and again.

Also, if you can, read BMW manufacturer codes instead of the vague OBD codes, it often helps. Your case may be simple enough. Put a quality sensor in there first.
