Missing the EWS module, project completely stopped

    Hi

Im putting this thread since i am facing a helpless situation in the middle of the restoration project, i could not get a clear idea from the existing once.

my original car is a 1991 318 manual. I got a conversion from a 323 1997 automatic. I got everything including - Key, EWS transmitter, Antenna, ECU but im missing the EWS module completely. Engine is not cranking. What are the options i have now?

What exactly did you change on the car? The 1991 E36s did not have any EWS module so even after swap it should turn over. Without the EWS unit, you won't be able to start the car though unless you either have removed the EWS from the DME (what is the part number of the DME? written on the side) or find the EWS unit which belonged to the ECU you have, or get another EWS unit with key transponder and synchronize it with the DME (requires wiring and INPA diagnostic), or read the ISN number from the DME, get an EWS emulator, write the ISN in the emulator and wire it up.

Do you happen to have an INPA diagnostic cable with round 20-pin connector? If so and if you have some soldering skills and a bunch of wires, I can help you out.

Anyway, if the engine does not crank, I would suspect you missed something in the wiring (engine ground or the wire from the ignition switch to the starter, or the battery is weak, or the starter is shot).

Check the tuned DME link in my signature.. Ask him to also do the EWS delete (=free), and check what rpm limiter you want (I kept it at stock 6500 rpm for such an old engine).. Will make your car very noticeably faster and you'll have a DME without EWS. No need to install all the EWS parts.

Fx323i is right in that in the 1991 chassis the engine should crank, no matter what.. So at least something else is wrong.
Here are all the INPA instructions: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...xperimentation . I think because your engine wiring and DME are OBD2, it should work with the cheap usb adapter cable (more complex and expensive ADS adapter cable not needed).

The ecu holds the ews security not the chassis. If useing a ews ecu then you need to meet its ews. A 97 320 auto has ews11. So... You have to have the ews coded out or buy one already coded.
Nobody would recertify these machines after somebody screwed with them without any visibility into what they did.

    hi all

love the support guys, thanks alot for the feedback, this is what we did finally, we were able to find a guy who is reprogramming ECUs locally, we went there and he did the job, cost some amount but starting the new engine in the car was a happy moment

I would personally just leave out the EWS module.. If the local programmer did his job and removed EWS from the DME firmware, you won't need the EWS unit anymore. Just drive and have fun :-) . Or am I missing something and are some things not working yet?

Depends on what you actually have missing. Some MS41 ECUs are not reprogrammable, these are in the ETK marked as MS41. Those which can be rewritten are marked as MS41/FLASH.

EWS is sorted, and no need a EWS module again, but check this pic, are these are the all modules an E36 comes with? So in here, i dont need the EWS module and the module which connected to a light blue socket, all others i want,

OK.. But first start by telling us what functionality you think you're missing. If everything works, then you're fine and can stop searching..

In my E36 I also have the module that controls the windows and locks and stuff in there.. But if the windows and doors and locks work just fine, then your older E36 probably has those modules in other places, or no modules at all and just a bunch of relays and stuff. With an engine conversion, except for the EWS, you don't need to worry about stuff inside the car.. Everything happens in the engine bay and DME (with some exceptions of course, but in general it is like that).

hi guys, so this is the latest update

nothing is working, i need to put a body controller, but im not sure which one is matching

and most importantly, some say body control module has to be reset to use and some say any body control module will work?

What if i buy an eBay gen iv module and will it work?
