Take the car to a BMW shop that has ISTA, and (1) have the codes read in all computers, especially the EGS, and (2) have the software updated.
There's a service bulletin for this condition.
What's the production date of your car?

Thanks chris , i have ordered the inpa software online and was going to and sort it myself if i could , i will do a scan and see if is
Showing any faults, the car is a 05 d plate with 80,000 miles in petty good nick
Is it possible to resolve it that way?
INPA is not going to provide a software update - if that's what you are asking.
'95 325iS - auto to manual swap done!
Thanks , what do dealers charge for that software update?
someone from your part of the world will need to respond here; in the US, typically it's usually an hour or so of labor for an update.

No worries , thanks
Hi chris
Do you know what they charge for that upgrade?
Thanks
Jim
Jim, I can't even prove that this is what's necessary for your car....because we don't have your car, here in the USA, and I have no way to research it. That said, this is what good BMW shops look for first, for BMWs with this transmission issue, in this generation.
I agree with my friend shadowpuck, as to the cost: somewhere around an hour of labor, maybe 1.5.
In remote portions of this country, that hour may be a hundred bucks at a dealership. In New York City, Washington DC or SF, that same hour will be $150-$175. In Galway? I haven't a clue, sorry.
