Hello, I did a bit of internet searching and couldn't find a video for this so I made one. Turns out you can shortcut this repair without removing the radiator like it lists in the service manual.
Anyways I hope this helps someone out.
This was my first DIY major project on my 2008 M5. It turned out very interesting.
I had a very rough idea, and decided to take the law into my own hands.
I took out the Fan, and every part that came in the way while reaching the
alternator from the bottom.
I ordered a used alternator from ebay for $100. However, its bearing was very
loud and decided to return it back. The seller however said its not worth returning
this old used part and closed my transaction and refunded my money.
On my alternator, the electronic module was bad. I replaced my electronic module
with the good one from ebay, and my alternator was back in action !!
This was about 2 years back, and its running super clean so far.
This is my goal: i will hunt down used parts in good working order and use them
on my car when the time comes.
Few other projects i have done: replaced 3 of the ignition coils with used ones
found on ebay for around $20-$45 each...i guess new Genuine ones cost around
$150 each.
Used parts are too risky in our cars, it like reusing a condom. Theres a tone of aftermarket support now for our cars and prices will continue to fall considering the plummeting prices of the beast. Considering eBay has new coils for around 250 for all 10 and have been test by several m5board members to work fine.
if car doesn't work, just go in for new part. car is now a frankenstein lol. nothing critical that goes into engine, or cooling, should be used parts. its only the external accessories. if the alternator fails, have it towed after the battery dies. New generator was like $600, and I can't be billed so much right now. I just use the car within a 35 mile radius from home for now. I agree on the risks. taking this car out on longer drives is just not a comfortable thought right now.
I replaced my (lifetime warranty) throttle body actuators, (NEW) alternator, just did a rod bearing change... planning on taking 500+ mile trips very soon. That's what these cars were built for.
Enjoy as intended.
