My friend has a 2002 325i with an automatic transmission. Ill try to make this quick. Her son was strung out on drugs and drove it on the rims until he ran out of gas and him and some friends towed it. I was told it just needed a battery. Installed new battery and tried to start it and nothing. Moved shifter into park and still nothing. The shifter moves free and does not feel like its moving the transmission linkage(broken linkage?). The gear indicator says s 2. If i move it to manual mode it will change to m1. I cant find What s 2 means. Thanks for the help
S2 means second gear, in sport mode. Certainly, the car needs to be put up on a lift, so that the shifter cable can be examined, tightened, etc....and further damage can be assessed. Driving a car on the rims is very likely to have resulted in significant damage to other components besides the wheels, which will be destroyed.
The car needs to go to a good independent BMW specialist shop, for a thorough inspection and list of what needs fixing. (If you were an extremely experienced BMW owner and BMW DIY guy, I'd give you a different answer, but I'm betting you don't have a BMW specific diagnostic computer, or the tools and experience necessary to diagnose the possible suspension and drivetrain damages.
