Guys/Gals,
I own a 2007 e91 with the N52 . Car has 183k miles and a good friend and independent BMW/Euro shop owner was telling me that it’s very high for an N52 car??? I know that they have their issues with the valvetronic and such however, it pulls very well and burns very little oil. He states that it’s the second highest mileage one he’s seen and there’s a reason for that. Idk, I was curious as to everyone’s thoughts and what are the highest mileage ones out there!? I do 90% of my maintenance myself and ahead of schedule using only high quality parts/lubricants. Any info would help. Cheers.

2008 328i e90 with 240,000, same battery.
I vote you that it's not crazy, but it's high.
I've run similar mileage on my E91, then sold it as a very well running car.
VANOS bolts are the more serious potential issue. My E90 was at 325,000km, so a little more in Miles before I broke a bolt. Engine didn't trash, just needed quick (and pricey) repair. (I took it in, but would do it myself if I ran into this issue again)
Otherwise it's maintenance, which you appear to be on top of.
I believe, with maintenance and some odd (but common) repairs, you could get pretty high numbers, if you aren't a continual clutch dumper like I was. (now in auto) The engines are well balanced for a straight 6.
IMO
If it's treating you well, run it into the ground, with love.
Once she starts to disrespect you with uncommon issues, sell it or trash it... trashing is soo much fun

183k is nothing for an N52 if maintained properly and repaired along the way as needed.

113,000 just getting broke in.
2011 e91, 6sp mt, M sport
220,000 no plans to stop driving it. It runs so good. Especially on the freeway.
152k but I have had a few issues....
Two years ago I bought a 2007 328xi wagon (automatic) with 118k.
The transmission went out (replaced it with a $700 unit from ebay-- took me a few weekends but worth the gamble)
The transfer case died (not the actuator or gear, the actual case broke) - replaced with a $250 unit from ebay - easy swap and I replaced the actuator gear at the same time
The crank position sensor broke $75 and an afternoon to fix
The alternator died $400 and an afternoon to fix
The battery died (likely toasted by the intermittent alternator)
As preventative maintenance I replaced the water pump (it was original), I also replaced the coils and vanos solenoids (similar symptoms to the crank position sensor -- they were not really broken).
It now has 152k and runs great. It did live a very hard San Francisco commuter life before I bought it (the previous owner crossed SF and drove to Marin daily for 5 years- mostly stop and go). I am not surprised that so much wear occurred in only 118k given the life that it previously had. I am pretty confident that given the work I put it it should be reliable for the next 50k miles. It goes to show that the type of driving is a much stronger indicator of wear than mileage. Despite the issue above I love the N52, very efficient and extremely smooth.

I know this is an older thread, but thought I would just include my 2006 325i e90. It will turn 200,000 miles this week....no codes. Uses about 2 qts between 5,000 mile oil changes. Maintenance within last year include new radiator, all hoses, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, coils, spark plugs, VCG, & eccentric shaft sensor.

As of May 6, 2019, it has 253,000 miles. Same original battery. Replaced the water pump for the first time about a year ago. I think one key to longevity is to be on top of the transmission service: I replace the oil and filter around every 50-60k miles. Motor oil + filter is replaced 3x per year. Replaced the valve cover gasket twice. Oxygen sensors once. Camshaft position sensors once. It has a new starter, replaced about 3 years ago. Accessory belt plus tensioner have been replaced twice. Tank vent valve replaced. Crankshaft position sensor replaced very early in its life. In tank fuel pump replaced once.
218K miles on an E70
2007 X5, and still works very well. Your mechanic is misinformed about N52. With proper maintenance of the paraphernalia (spark plugs, coils, vanos solenoids, DISA valve(s), valve cover gasket, valve cover, camshaft sensors, etc), that engine itself is built to last. In fact, I am pretty sure it acn easily go 500K miles without a major issue.
