So I was driving my beloved 1997 840ci the other morning and I needed to turn on the heater. For most of you, that's a simple process. Probably something you do on a daily basis this time of the year. However, I'm in Arizona. We don't normally use heat of any kind. This morning it was all the way down to 48 degrees fahrenheit. Of course, I needed to wear my REI Magma 850 Down Jacket to ward off the frostbite and potential hyperthermia-like conditions facing me that morning. It took about 15 minutes, but I figured out where the heater knob/dial was and another 15 minutes to learn how to use the darn thing. After a few minutes, the car started to get toasty warm. However, there was a cold draft wafting about and mixing in with the life-saving warmer air. The center right vent was pouring out cold, frigid, arctic air. How could this be? Both dials were turned all the way to the warmest settings. Yet, the evil cold air simply would not yield it's deathly icy grip. What gives?
a stuck or broken stepper motor for the air mixing flap can cause this, well known among E32 owners. In my case the clips holding the stepper motor were too weak and the stepper motor slipping out of position, here some pics
Here is how we fixed it http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/1091582/
the pics we made on a spare unit.
Here we made a youtube of the problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCzWommF60A
