    Oil Filter Housing Gasket (O-Ring)

    Hello All,

I'm going to be doing the oil filter housing gasket and vanos oil line on my e36 soon. My car leaks a little oil and have tracked it down to the gasket or the o-ring in the plug. I'm almost certain it's the o-ring; i've looked at about 20 different posts about the little o-ring and i can't get a definite answer about the correct size of the o-ring. I've read that many people have replaced the o-ring only too find that the car is now leaking more because the o-ring did not fit properly. I want to avoid this mess the first time around so if anybody can give me the correct size or part number that would be wonderful! Also, how to properly reinstall this o-ring. Any important information, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You,

    Alex.

The Mann oil filters come with the correct o-rings.

Are you talking about the freeze plug?

Here are some threads on them:

My indy shop found out mine was leaking after I had just thrown in a new OFHG. I believe they swapped to an E46 OFHG as I now have extra sensors that don't connect to anything.

I believe OP means the o-ring that seals the oil filter housing against the engine block. Not the o-ring for the oil filter.

Whichever online parts vendor you prefer, they'll almost all have a chart or system to check fitment to your car. You can reference RealOEM.com with your VIN and use that to find the specific part number.

You have a newer e36's your plugs are probably not leaking, they were sealed properly. Use a mirror to check before buying them.

This is what a leaky OFHG and Vanos hose looks like on a 97 M52, $5 gasket and $30 hose.

Gave away my BMWs, driving a VW and an Audi now.
