And don't forget it's Automatic only!
I really tried to reserve judgement, and not be too negative about this thing, but you got to be kidding me.
Who exactly is the market for this? Might as well throw in the towel now - they won't even sell 1000/year at that price - and what's the Toyota coupe variant gonna cost? - is it really going to be the most expensive Toyota?

I heard $65,690, so that's...good?

That's optioned 6-cylinder pricing. It's on par with what the E89 cost. So... What's the problem?

FWIW - the M roadster cost ~$47k in 2001 which would be about $67k now. Buyers are gonna have to ask themselves if a mass-market, dull, automatic cruiser is worth M money.
It may take a few years for BMW to evaluate the sales and feedback to determine whether or not producing an M version makes any business sense.
The brand is horribly diluted right now, and I see that as the main issue more-so than design, reliability, pricing etc... I know I'll never be comfortable paying for a new one, but the dilution is killing my desire to own the newer models 5-10 years down the road when I can scoop them up at auction for <10 grand.
We are a minority of car enthusiasts that see this price as excessive. My group of friends either lease or trade in cars after the warranty period; they don't want to deal with repair costs or reliability issues. As one of my friends said after dropping over $60k for his BMW, "I have a $60k recliner and I love it." That's what's important to him.
As noted above, time will tell. This is normal business practice for large companies as they can readily absorb poor business decisions. For example, I lead in a project that cost the company over $4 mil in less than a year. The executive that lead the effort blamed changing market conditions for the failure. The loss made little difference to a company that had a market cap of over 50 bil at the time.
Just my thoughts.

My friend is a retired BMW service manager. When we were shopping for a Z, he told us to stay away from any newer models, because they were constantly in for repairs. He said BMW is notorious for being at the technology forefront testing all the latest, greatest on their customers. For us, it was a choice of a classic or a modern vehicle. We would much rather have a classic.

Correct statement: $47k in 2001 was very much like $67k today. Probably why I never bought an M Roadster back then :-)))
Some new Miatas cost $35,000 so this is not as big a shock as it may seem at first glance.
C&D brief report was very favorable despite the ZF automatic-in fact they are hinting at a Porsche (boxster) BMW comparison sometime in the future.
I was reading more about it - I guess there will be 4 cylinder models that will start at about 50k, which is more reasonable, but only automatic as well, and as usual with BMW - outside the USA will be offered a more basic model 2.0 Liter with manual transmission. The 6 cylinder M model still does not make sense to me - when one can get an M2 for cheaper.

The bigger deal will be if the Supra costs more than the Z4

looks similar to the Z4 coupe - which is not bad - I bet the Supra's come in at 59k or so - and I would guess they would sell a lot better than the BMW roadster but who knows!
what the hell has BMW done - this ends by me wanting a Toyota?
