headliner question

I have a 94 325ci (60K). The headliner is loose and hanging along the front. Service records indicate the it has been repaired before.
I am wondering if I can just cut the first panel out back to the first rib. I don't mind that it would look incomplete but will it be functional?

You can and it will still be functional.

And that rib will be strong enough? Is the headliner important, besides looks?

headliner is only for looks. Some people add a little sealant to the rib to keep it in place. plastic and years of heat and cold reduces it's grasp.
