    440i Starter Ignition Malfunction

The title pretty much sums it all up. The car is a 2018 440i that was new in August 2017. Current miles about 6,900. It's been sitting covered for about ten weeks. During that period it's been sitting full time on a battery maintainer. Not one issue up til today. I take it off the maintainer and check battery voltage at 12.8V.

I uncovered it today to start it and use it more regularly going forward. It won't start; it won't turn over; no clicks ------- nothing, but it will come back with a "Starter Ignition Malfunction" message displayed in the instrument cluster that says "the ignition has been locked out. Go see your Service Dept."

I guess that's what I'll have to do, but I thought I would check here to see if anyone has a simple solution. Is there some special process to start the car after prolonged storage??

Everything seems to work just fine and have ample power. The sound system works great; lights are nice and bright. I haven't checked for codes ---- I don't think that there are any.

Sans any help I'll haul it off to the dealer.

Did you drive in any deeper water, 6inches or more?
The starter is at the lowest point of the transmission, and it can easily get water damage.

It sounds like the starter solenoid won't actuate, then you get that message. It may start with a few tries, but yea, it needs to see service.

Thanks. No --- no exposure to water other than rain on the roof. The dealer has it ---- we'll see what they say.

On top of the fact that the car won't start, I learned
how inept BMW Roadside Assistance is
over the course of the last 24 hours. Hope I never have to use them again.

    Hi Bruceincam,
I'm having the same issue on my F30 335. Can you please let me know, what the diagnosis on your 440i?
