I have been fighting vanes codes and stumbling for a year now. Replaced solenoids with Dorman and it was good for a while and then it came back. Stepped up and replaced with Cardone solenoids for quadruple the cost and it was good for 1000 miles and came back, but only on the intake. Changed my oil and realized that I was missing the insert in the oil filter. Replaced the oil filter cap and got about 250 miles with no code. We’ll see how it goes. Anyone else experience this? 2007 e60 530xi

Glad you discovered the missing insert from the oil filter cap. That insert serves two functions. First, aligns the filter element to filteer assembly allowing oil to be filtered. And secondly to seal a drain in the bottom of the filter assembly that drains the bottom of the assembly back to the oil pan. When the oil filter cap insert is in place the green "O" ring seals this passage. With the absence of the insert, when the engine is off, oil drains from the filter assembly back to the pan. With each engine start, the filter assembly must refill before the engine receives lubrication. Think I would change the oil and filter after 800-1000 miles to help cleanup the issue. Also pull your Vanos solenoids and give them a cleaning with brake cleaner. Good luck.
