A reputable local garage has quoted me a reasonable price for this, using new LUK self-adjusting clutch and dual-mass flywheel. They say that BMW probably fitted either LUK or Sachs clutch and flywheel as OEM.
Question 1: is that right? If not, what brand of clutch and flywheel did they fit to my model, and can these parts still be obtained in that brand?
Question 2: If LUK is not BMW OEM, how are LUK clutches and flywheels rated for my model of BMW? Btw, we tow a medium-sized caravan for a few trips each year. Van is maximum laden weight 1,350 kg. We carry a lot of stuff in the car, but are never anything like very close to its GVW or to each maximum axle load, and whole outfit is a long way below car's GTW.
Yes, LUK or Sachs is the OE parts.
Thanks, Jim!
In that case, subject to further checking at the garage, £900 for a LUK SAC + DMF + labour and VAT sounds very good compared with BMW dealer's(" heavily discounted") £1,787. Dealer is 40 miles away and would provide a loan car. Garage is local, but a long walk (no bus) and (unsurprisingly doesn't have a loan car. We are very car dependent, so might have difficulties if he found he needed something after starting the job that he hadn't bargained for initially. By contrast, BMW dealer can get most normal service parts on same day as he orders them - depends what.
We'll attempt to give the "mighty matter" mature consideration before deciding who to use!
Thanks again!!
I poked around REALOEM for part numbers for your application. We didn't get the 530d in the States
It looks like the clutch kit -part #21217528209 was the same kit (clutch disc, self-adjusting clutch cover, throw-out bearing) was used in the US 540i (v8 enigne). The LUK version is some US$280.
but the dual-mass flywheel Part# 21217512329 was used only in the 530d and 525d, and it looks quite expensive (US$800)
Please confirm this with your own research and make sure your mechanic is using the right flywheel
