My sons 2003 325i has been running perfectly then started having slight shift issues and threw a code that indicated a likely voltage issue. Alternator was good, battery was bad so replaced the battery. Shifted better for a day then started shifting poorly and slipping and rpm's were cranking up really high. He towed it to my house and the codes are P0700 P0721 P1732. After towing I tried to pull it into my driveway and it won't engage at all. Drive and reverse will not work. In both gears when giving it gas, it will barely creep at all. My son is a poor student and I'm a poor parent because I have 3 kids who are all poor college students. I'm hoping this is something electrical rather than mechanical. Could this be a speed sensor issue? Would the car not drive at all due to a bad sensor? I just don't have the money to take this car to a shop unless absolutely necessary but I've got to fix it. Help / advice would be very much appreciated. Car has 130k miles if that matters
When was the last time transmission fluid level was checked, or fluid/filter changed?
I'm no transmission tech but those would be my initial questions.
If you're mechanically inclined, check the transmission wiring for good clean connections.
Afterwards clear codes, test drive for signs of improvement.
Go to www.bimrs.org to find a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers. I’m betting the transmission fluid is low. Be advised that BMW sourced automatic transmissions from GM of France and ZF of Germany. They are different transmissions, and they use different transmissions fluids. The GM transmission uses Dexron3 while the ZF transmission uses a Pentosin brand fluid. The GM transmission has a smooth sided transmission fluid pan while the ZF transmission has a ribbed transmission fluid pan. The transmission computers (EGS in BMWspeak) are different.
Do you happen to have an update for what you did/how that went? I just took my 2003 325i in to Autozone to get a diagnostic, and am currently experiencing the same codes and car experience that you were. Any info would very helpful!
You are never going to get any good info from auto zone, sounds like the trans went kaput
