4L30E Transmission Code 6F Torque Converter-Clutch / Gear Check (No dash lights)

All - I have been curious about a transmission code my 528 wagon has been showing. 6F torque converter clutch / gear check. This isn't the first time I have seen it, but I only happened to come across this code scanning the transmission computer. No light has ever illuminated on the dash in order for me to find it, and I don't experience any driveability issues (that I know of). My end goal would be to convert my car to a manual transmission if this goes out. I'd obviously like to have this issue fixed (if possible) rather than go down that road. So I'm here looking for some input.

This code has been hard to find information about, and when I do find something, it seems to be linked to other codes with no real answer given as to what a fix is. If I had to take a shot in the dark, I'd try replacing the TCC solenoid based on what I see in video #1 below.

I changed the fluid and filter about 4,000 miles ago.

I have two videos below showing two different 4th gear conditions while accelerating and decelerating on the freeway. Video #1 shows possible 4th gear slipping? Video #2, taken the next day shows the same condition without any issues. In video #1, I'm not sure if that's just the car doing it's thing, I am under the impression 4th gear should be locked?

    Video #1 https://youtu.be/XuTNQd2vrJ0
    Video #2 https://youtu.be/3Ok3S_Gea4U

Here's an image showing the shadow code:

    Any help is appreciated!

I did some more digging and found this site http://bmwfault.codes/ today. Typing in the 6F code traced it back to P0740 or Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Open, or of course a slew of other issues, assuming the site is correct. Can anyone confirm that a new TCC solenoid may fix this before I order?

Also, can anyone confirm this is the correct part?

Bump, it seems that the 'slip' in video #1 occurs when I immediately start the car, not go fast enough down the street to allow 4th gear to lock (less than 45mph), and then get on the freeway using a bit of throttle to accelerate. Once I'm on the freeway, that condition of 'slip' occurs. When I slow to 20 mph or stop, then 4th locks properly like in video #2.

Can anyone confirm that this is how the transmission is supposed to act?

Definitely should not act like that. I've got an 03 530i with the same issue however mine is intermittent. You can try replacing just the solenoid and see if that fixes it, it's worth a shot in my opinion. For me at about 80mph it doesn't lock up or stops working correctly and I can still sort of accelerate but it is much slower and it feels more like the engine is revving with no extra speed increase.

Just replace the P/N and see what happens, check realoem.com to find the for sure P/N

Just wanted to post an update to this thread and the 6F code.

While info on why this shadow code is limited at best, I did do a few things to the car.

New TCC solenoid, Meistersatz filter, and fresh fluid.

The slipping noted in video #1 in the links above has not gone away.

But, this type of slipping is not something that always happens. When it does happen, it happens when the transmission is cold. It particularly seems to happen when I leave work and go home using the freeway on-ramp (and not being able to get to 45mph to give the TCC a chance to lock). This on-ramp slopes downward and has a light for traffic, making the car sit at an angle while the traffic waits for their turn. By the time it is my turn to take off, the slope then levels out, and by the time I reach a speed where the TCC can lock, you sometimes get what you see in video #1.

One of the ways I've been able to get the TCC to lock once the issue is happening is to put the car in neutral while I'm driving, wait for the RPM's to drop, then put the car back in drive.

I'm wondering if it's just a programming thing internally and not actually an issue?

I'm a bit confused as to what actually is causing this.
    • Fluid level is correct.
    • Transmission has no issues.
    • Transmission shift smoothly.
    • Problem random.

Any other info you all may have would be great!

    4 BMWs.
At 165K miles my 4spd auto does odd things when it's hot and trying to punch it to pass and maneuver around other cars. It stutters as if it's losing fuel for a few moments. If I let off the accel pedal and then re apply but without heavy accel it smooths out. The RPMs to not rise like it's slipping out of gear, but feels more like fuel is being cut off. No codes. It's only done it twice in the past three months. I think it might be the old fuel pump or clogged filter.

I don't think I have any weird issues with mine, and the closer it is to operating temperature, the smoother it shifts. My car is pretty well sorted mechanically, so I don't think it's any lack of maintenance on my part. I've put roughly 8k miles on the car since I owned it and the transmission hasn't got worse, so I guess that's good lol. I just don't like to deal with any issues. I've always had manual cars, so I've never had to think twice about transmission reliability.

    Worse case, I'll be doing a 5-speed swap :p
