Hey,
I'm looking to change my E32 730i for an E60/61 (first generation). It is time for a bit more options like a pano roof, parking assistance and seat heating ect...
What are the engines I should be looking for?
Torque and reliability as most important features
For now I had my eye on the 525d manual, they seem to go over 300K without any problems.
E60 is the least reliable model as far as I am concerned. I would stay away, especially if you are not going to work on it yourself.

Its hard to believe there is not one E60 model that is reliable...
and if it's true, too bad for BMW
Are you looking for a pre-facelift or a facelift car?
Pre facelift I would go for a 530i.
Facelift 525d with the 3l engine.
Can't agree that this is bad cars. We have 2 pre lci and they are wonderful.
yeah, I don't want to spend more than €5000 so I guess it will be an pre-facelift with a lot of Km's on the counter.
Not every engine is built to go over 250ooo km's. So if I buy one, I want to know if the car is up for the task.
But maybe BMW isn't the brand for me
If someone know a better alternative...
- less than €5000
- rear wheel drive !!
- station wagon

It's not the engine that's the problem. It's the peripheral systems. Look for my threads about maintenance. Near $25K in three years (thank you extended warranty). However, it drives beautifully. I am now doing my own repairs, but I have an INPA system, lots of years wrenching, a scissor mid-rise lift, and an extensive tool set. I just rebuilt the rear air suspension, to the tune of ~ $500 in parts.

Livin the dream!
that's cool, but I don't have the tools or the knowledge to do all those repairs myself
