Hello everybody. I've searching and can't come up with much on the subject. Local parts desk guys tells me Pentofrost NF is the fluid to use in my 97' 1.9's radiator, and it seems to be up to spec, as far as google tells me. Other than BMW blue, is this stuff OK? anyone here have any experience with it? Thanks.
Larry
I use Zerex G-05 or G-48 if I cant find BMW blue
BMW blue isnt that much more expensive than parts store stuff fwiw

BMW does not make fluids.
Pentosin makes BMW's manual transmission fluid, and BMW's coolant.
Would you like some links to both?

Who makes the fluids for BMW is of little value. First, the company can change with each contract cycle. Second, there is often a clause in the contract stating that they can not sell the same product to the aftermarket that they make for BMW. BMW is huge on that clause.
You have an aluminum./iron engine with an aluminum/plastic radiator, just like EVERY OTHER car out there now. Green universal antifreeze is plenty good, specially if you change it at regular intervals. But if you insist on blue, go with Rowe, or dealer stuff. Or the Pentosin, but it's the most expensive of the choices. Or... how about windshield washer fluid? Premixed to -20F protection, far better heat transfer capabilities than ethylene glycol, <$3 a gallon, and it meets the number one forum requirement, it's BLUE!!!

I heard that the blue Mercedes Benz coolant (which is cheaper) is basically the same as the blue BMW coolant.
The Rowe fluid claims compatibility with BMW, Merc, and VW. What that means, exactly, I don't know.
Vintage, my point is that what you think means something may not, and even if you do get to the bottom of it, it will change next month. And yes, I have a friend that was tasked with moving an entire assembly line from Europe to Asia to meet the conditions of the BMW contract. And even though the parts made on the new line were to the same engineering specs, they were not the same. Yet everyone advertises them as OEM.

In the case of the Pentosin MTF and Pentofrost fluids, Pentosin did not advertise them as OEM. Pentosin data sheets just showed the specs and compatibility. The OEM connection came from forums and vendors, where Pentosin was indicated to have made the fluids.
This jug of MTF2 actually has the Pentosin logo on it.
75W-80 MTF2 Transmission Fluid - 1 Liter
For BMW manual transmissions requiring MTF-LT-2 fluid... This fluid is specialty design for use in ZF & Getrag manual transmissions.

So do you know whether Pentosin is no longer the supplier of BMW OEM MTF and coolant, and who the replacement is? The point of this thread was whether Pentofrost NF is an OK coolant for a Z3. I can think of none better.

Yes, I'm leaning towards the Pento NF. Looks like the ROWE coolant is also a good bet, and seems to be cheaper per gallon than The NF.....
